throttle return springs

For a while now I've thought the throttle on my 400SE was too heavy.I oiled the cable in an attempt to fix the problem but I noticed as I was taking the cable off that there are two return springs on my car. One is longer than the other ( more coils on it)and thinner material making it much lighter than the shorter thicker spring. Is this a failsafe backup spring or should they both be the same? I've looked at engine photos in the classifieds and I can't see any engines with two return springs. Should I have two springs or has someone been over cautious in the past and fitted two? TIA

Hi my 400 only had one return spring on it, but the 450 has 2 so it is a bit stiffer but more sensible to have 2 on the bigger engine. Take one off and let your feet do the talking

pwd95, your springs appear to both be the same length and strength as far as I can tell from the photo. Is that correct? They both look like the weaker of my two springs.I think perhaps someone has fitted a stronger spring. I might see if I can find a weaker one to match the longer spring and lighten the throttle.

They're the same length deffo albiet one needs a bit of grease.

I have two. Took one off as an experiment, but put it back on very quickly. Nearly had to lift the throttle to close it and get it back to idle properly!

Seems that originally one spring is to return the cable, and the second:
- a safety one in case the first lets go
- in case of cable break (and the cable can't return!) be sure the throttle closes fully. So you don't get stuck with an open throttle.

Strictly speaking it already has three: there's another round the throttle shaft
So you need four to stay ahead

Think they must fit some big buggers to a ships AFM's..... which reminds me, cop them bearings clicky

So the crank stays still and the earth rotates around it?

I have twelve... one on each throttle body (8), two more on the actuation cam and two more to make sure that the throttles stay shut when I lift off... the charger had a habit of blowing them open so the engine idled at around 3000 rpm.
