I left my 350i for two months unused and since I started it again the idle is very rough; it splutters and stalls unless I held the pedal gas down; the sound and smell suggests the mixture is over rich.
The car runs fine when in gear but the idle is a mess.
I changed plug sparks, fill the tank with optimax + injectors cleaner, give it a clean run on the motorway: it did improve but it did not make a massive difference.
Any suggestions?
My knowledge of technical terms is poor so please any suggestion should be given in basic terms.
Many thanks

Air fuel mix needs balancing ? Someone on here must know a place with the kit near you .Not expensive .

Had sort of a like wise issue (but much worse - engine would run for a few seconds with throttle/die immediately at idle) and I was tipped on that it could be the throttle pot. If this is not ok/not right setting idle could be rough.

My problem was then the coolant temperature sensor and now looking back a couple of years later had no issues = throttle pot is fine.

Perhaps worth to have a look at both possibilities.

thanks; how can I find the throttle pot or the sensors in the engine bay? I've got Steve Heath book but on this point there are little informations... is there anything I can try by myself or should I leave to a specialist (would a Rover mechanic be ok)?
I live in central London, don't know any good mechanics around, whenever I take the car I'm stuck in traffic and the sound and smell is rather embarassing...
thanks for any help

Both can be found under the bonnet ;-)

Throttle pot(entiometer) is mounted close to the throttle on the front of the plenum (where the air enters the plenum). It is black and is fixed with two bolt/screws and has a few wires going into it. At idle there should be 325miliVolt. When you do a search on the forum, you will find a lot of information on it.

The coolant temperature sensor can be found between the distributor and the plenum. There are two sensors (both vertical mounted), and the one closest to the plenum is the one I was talking about. Small test could be to disconnect the leads to it, and short them out (makes the ECU think the engine is hot). If the engine runs fine then, you have found the sensor to be replaced. In general this is the worst and most notorious sensor.

Both not too difficult.
