Is it really knackered and noisey, or just a bit loose?

If the latter you can usually regrease them and nip up the hub nut (not too tight though!) because they are tapered bearings.

Spooky, just about to reply. Got me mits on a replacement (Granada MK2, but there was a mention of a MK3) and changed. The old outer one was grinding like a good un, lubed with crushed anvils. Silvery deposits like glitter coming out when I removed for inspection yesterday. I did repack but still nadgered and slack. The silvery deposits put me off driving it anyway. Might explain the vibration and noise coming through the steering that was on and off. Offski for a test drive.....
