Start up problem takes a twist!!!!!

I took the advice and got a recoditioned Starter Motor. Car fires up first time now no problem. But now i cannot stop the tw@, turned the ignition off and it is still running, Wind up or what. Convinced this car is the ex mother-in-law in disguise. Anymore ideas.

When you turn off and it keeps running - do any of the other things work that should turn off with the ignition? If so, it could be a dodgy barrel switch on the key... The key could be turning, but either the end of the barrel isn't turning with it, or you have a short somewhere...

No it only ran for about 1 minute after i took the key out of the ignition.

Was it hot? Could possibly be heavily coked up and igniting off the glowing carbon on the heads? It's a real head-scratcher!! Sorry mate

Only drove for about three mile or so. Just changed coolant today. Changed oil and filter today. Put recon starter on today. Possilble that something has been knocked or moved, Maybe a loose earth or somthing of that order so i am told.

Ok, got my thinking cap on... When it ran on, was it like a smooth idle or hunting? And when it cut out, did it chugg and cut, or was it like when you normally turned the key off? ie. cutting dead?

Just went dead eventually like a normal switch off. Just made a call to a guy who runs a garage up here explained what exactly happend and he is pretty sure the exciter wire??? has probably burnt out as this would have been sending a charge to the starter constantly as to keep the starter running.

Hmmm... ok, but that would mean that the starter would have been engaged on your 3 mile run and it would have whined like a supercharger as you drove... (the bearings are not rated to deal with full engine revs). And it doesn't explain why it ran on, rather than was pushed on without a spark. And why did it stop? Hard to give decent advice without being there! Sorry! Best take it to a 'man who can' who you can trust and see what's what.

I started thinking this but... no chance. It would have been grating the starting dog and whining away too.

Try driving it a few more times, see if it keeps happening. Worst case scenario is you have to wait a minute after switchoff each time.

Then try:

- pulling off the king lead from the coil (use a stick!)

- pulling the fuel pump fuse

Thanks for your advice. I have dissconnected the battery for now. I have to go away to work tommorow so i will have to sort it when i get back. Hopefully in time for the BBWF.

Adam - I think we all have pulled the king lead off a coil at ONE time by hand (no stick!!)... never again!! F##K it hurts!!
