How do I clean between the small bolts on OZ spilt rims? My fingers are too big (and I have small ladies hands anyway).
What do I use?
I got the Dremel out earlier and did between the bolts, but the polishing kit I have does not get close enough to the bolts. I now have shiney bits between the bolts and around the bolts looking tired.

I tried to take a few of the bolts out, but after an hour, I gave up.
Anyone have a tool and what is the likelyhood I'll sheer some of the bolts if I get hold of a tool?

Any ideas greatfully apreciated.

Cheers,
L33.

i remove the wheel, lay it down and fill the bolt area with coke, leave overnite and then use a tooth brush to finish of.

Vinegar is a good cleaner. Soaked my coolant system caps overnight and they came up lovely removing bits of rust aswell.

I'd personally avoid the mild acid (coke / vinegar) as it could be possible for them to get behind the bolt and attach the seal that keeps the air in..

I use an electric tooth brush with autosol.

Getting the mess off is also difficult - here I use car polishing muslin - it gets torn up but watch your fingers.

Not 100% sure, but I've been told not to undo the bolts, or mess with them, as they should allways be done up at the same time with a special tool, to create even load, else it can cause the wheels to crack.

This is way A lot of polishing companys won't touch split rims.

Don't know if this it true, but may not be a good idea dismantling them yourself for this reason.

Im sure some one who know more will put us right tho.

Lee, I'm just about to refurbish mine - can I ask what sealant you used? I was thinking of using instant gasket stuff:-

is that ok?

I believe its OK as long as you spend time doing the bolts up properly, i.e. 12oclock, 6oclock, 3oclock, 9oclock, then index round by one bolt and repeat.

It may be a good idea to do this in 2 stages too, i.e. do the whole thing for half the final torque figure, then go around again nipping them up to full torque. I DONT KNOW THIS, but its PROBABLY around the 20lb/ft mark.

HTH.

P.S. Does anybody have the sockets for undoing the 10 point OZ racing bolts?

The wheels I took apart were compomotive split rims. They had runner rings that kept everything all air tight. I think the OZ wheels are the same principle but i've never taken them apart. Personally, I wouldn't reply on a tube of instant gasket stuff. I'd rather clean up and reuse the original gaskets. Oz no longer supply the gaskets so you won't get new ones.

Thanks for the tip - I haven't split them yet so didn't know about the runner rings/gaskets - I'll treat them with respect when I do the job.

This chap in Holland does - Hans Daalhuisen hamada@planet.nl

He's supplied me with replacement stainless steel bolts (12 point) and zinc plated nuts and will also loan the OZ sockets for a very reasonable "wear & tear" charge. Details are on the Wedgepages site ( www.tvrwedgepages.co.uk ) 2002 news archive.

I also have the 10 point tools

The key to doing the nuts up is using threadlock

The sealant is a Sikkaflex product will dig out the details
