400SE - Base of Gearstick parts?
Discussion
A few weeks ago I had a temporary fix done as the parts were not in stock with Rimmer Brothers.
Unfortunately the temp fix has not lasted that long and I now have it back to as it was, whereby I find it hard to select many gears and there is a lot of play with the gearstick. Especially getting back over to 1st and 2nd from any higher gears.
The mechanic who fixed it, said I need a ball, plastic bush and circlip (that are located at the bottom of the stick on the remote) to get it back on track. The bush was worn and the circlip had snapped.
Is anyone familiar with these parts and can quote me their numbers or where else I may get them from if Rimmers stil dont have them in stock? I explained the arrangement to Rimmers who were not familiar with how I described it, and this is how the mechanic described it to me (who gave me the part numbers a fortnight ago, but now I've mislaid them
.)
Cheers

Paul - are you _sure_ this is the problem? Or are you just taking the mechanic's word for it?
At the base of the gearstick there is a metal ring held down with a single bolt - the tab on this ring quite often snaps off. However, the gearstick will stay in place because the thing that _really_ holds it there is a big wire spring that engages on either side of the stick.
Also - the nylon bush in the remote isn't that prone to wear, and has been replaced. My money is still on the remote<->gearbox bushes perishing, this is a very common problem. It causes the whole remote mechanism to flap about and makes the gearchange very imprecise.

Hi Adam, I had a look in under the rubber cover yesterday and Saturday for advice from others at Gang on the Green weekend.
I saw a bolt (8-10mm head I think) head at the back of the stick, which I assume is inside there once undone is the problem. The mechanic is referring to the plastic bush & circlip and ball in the remote, he said when he replaced the circlip last time & the bush was worn and needed replacing but RB never had the parts in stock. When he replaced the circlip that was snapped last time with the best he could find, the gears changed lovely. Does this make any more sense, sorry for my lack of knowledge on this
doing my best
appreciate all your help

appreciate all your helpHi Paul - the parts were definitely replaced as advised previously.
The other issue may be as Adam suggested that there is a y shaped spring which retains the lever in the correct place via lugs either side of the lever. Perhaps the spring has popped over the top of the lug which is why the lever alignment is out.
This will be a very quick and easy job to do and as Adam says, the bush should not have worn in under 500 miles since replaced!!

When I look down at the base of the stick. The Y shaped clip that holds the stick central & in place is still in place and holds 2 x (roughly) 2mm diameter pins of the stick in position fine, so its not this. (it looks like this y shaped clip if its the right one u mention can be pushed off easily with a good screwdriver)
Once I've seen it, its not what I think the mechanic tells me, (but I'm not the mechanic!) I think its under here he is on about as theres no place for a bush to rest
unless the bush has gone completely?

I tried TVRfix they put me onto TVR Car Parts. I am waiting on a call back from them to see if they can source it with the number, but RB said they cant so dont hold much hope up for anybody else to.

Anyone know if I can get one made anywhere with this number?
