Hi Everyone,
I've not posted on the Wedge forum before (being a Chim owner) so please be gentle.
This is purely a matter of interest, a mate of mine has a 400SE with side pipes (for what its worth) and i've been comparing power delivery with my 450 Chim.
The power on his seems much higher up the rev range than my Chim and he regularly hits 7k revs where my 450 has the limiter just above 6k.
Is the 400SE engine any 'hotter' than a standard 400 chim engine? There is a guy on the Chim pages looking to replace his broken Wedge engine with a 400 chim engine and i was under the impression the 400se Wedge engine was a little 'worked on'
I know the early 390se engine was well fettled but later cars i believe were more standard.
So if anyone would like to clear that lot up for me it would be appreciated.
regards,
Nick

The early NCK engines flappers, was more worked on than the others, Mine has flowed heads cosworth pistion and forged rods. plus other tweeks, this was all standard, not after mods. also these was re-bored 3.5
The chim 4ltr was a different block, and was basicly the new style 4lr landrover engine, with a few mods and different ECU, to change the cararistics.
I've had mine at well over 6000 in 2nd a few times for a fraction of a second, as soon as I've noticed I changed gear. but was still pulling very hard, and no nasty noises. its hard to keep a eye on it, as it has no rev limiter.
I know I was getting about 250 BHP on the dyno, this was a long time ago.
The closet race i've had has been with a Escort cosworth, but I just beat it. but gives you an idea of performance.
I think they relised its cheeper to just go with bigger engines, than to spend loads tuning. so may be worth you fried just dropping a 5lr in, as a fully spec 4lr, that's in good condition, is going to be very rare.
Is go bigger unless there is a reason to stay at 4lr.

TVR claimed 240bhp for the 4.0litre chim engine, and 267bhp for the 400se engine.
Part of this may be down to the lack of cats on the wedge, making it a bit freer breathing and able to run a bit richer. I was told by a bod at TVR power many moons ago that the 400se also had quite a lot of work done to the heads in terms of opening up and polishing the ports, which the 4.0chim did not get.
When my 400se engine was rebuilt, the experienced guy who did it commented on how niceley the heads had been worked over.

Your right on the claimed figures but I've never seen a car actualy get those figures. but if you take 10% of each you get a more realic figure.Part of this may be down to the lack of cats on the wedge, making it a bit freer breathing and able to run a bit richer. They still go like stink tho. also I find NA BHP to be a lot more powerfull that turbo BHP so its a bit subjective.
My peek BHP was at 5600 ish, even tho it would still feel strong at over 6k
I've been told the hotwire car's was not mapped past 5.5k ish, so they don't rev so freely past 5.5k not sure how true this is but the hotwire wedges (non NCK) I've been in would not rev like mine does / did.

Cheers Nick. Am gonna have a word with RT soon as I know I have the readies to do anything I know the early 390se engine was well fettled but later cars i believe were more standard.

Not really heard of any RV8's hitting 7K..
except those that have been race prepared.. and that costs loads.
He either has something very special or drives it like he stole it !
Well i'm thinking a bit of both..except those that have been race prepared.. and that costs loads.

He does hammer it but i've been a passenger in in it a few times and it definitely has its power alot higher up the rev range than my 450 chim and you notice the 'relative' lack of low down torque.
And hearing and seeing it hit 7k on the rev counter is quite eye-opening..
So im not certain either way.. he may just be thrashing to death a nice 400. On the other hand it doesn't seem to complain...

as I said I've had mine well in the red a few times and the car has never complained.
Current re-build has nothing to do with this honest. but I can't say due to forum rules.
also as I said the NCK and any rouse engines are at lot different from all the others.
Do you know if you friends 400 is a NCK.

I think the solid lifter engines have more of a chance of doing that..
My old 400 SE would rev to around 5.5K (if I remember right..) and the last 500 rpm to 6K - the engine note changed .. so really you knew to change up as the engine was not pulling as hard.. at least that is what it felt like.
My Griff 500 - well it was all over by about 5.5K too..
The SEAC .. well I have a new set of double valve springs and a loose tappet or two - so I've not reved it too hard since the rebuild.

If you want revs then get a 3.9 block
This so? I assume you can build a good screamer out of a 3.5 but does the 3.9 mean you can build a bit more grunt onto that scream? (Hah, that makes no sense...bit late in the day...)
Yes. Both engines share the same short stroke so are more willing to rev then the larger capacity engines..

Speak to IanStewart about that one. He regulary takes his 3.9 to 7k+.
Its an old resleeved p6 3.5 wobbly block with standard polished rods and forged pistons plus arp fasteners.
It made 280+bhp on the dyno not that long ago! I'm guessing thats because of its ability to breath and pass alot of air at high revs.

yep, 7k on a regular basis, it had been buzzed to 8200+ when I accidently deleted the rev limiter and missed a shift, we only found this when checking the ECU perameters,
use good bolts, steel flywheel, and good pistons, and it should stay together,

Guys, I cant raise the cash to get this sorted and keep both the cars that have almost cost my sanity and sure blown away my credit for another 12 months.... so have to either sell the Rover p5B Coupe ( over 4Grand spent since bought last year for 3400 but I want around 3k for it as is) OR sell the wedge as is (bought 5400 in march and spent 4500 since and STILL has blown liner)
PS Am cancelling my room at Ettington so if anyone wants one it may stop me being charged again for another holiday I cant go on cos the fecking car aint ready

So - bring the P5B.:miserable t
t smiley: I for one will welcome its prescence. It's the car that started me off the road of Rover V8 ownership, and, logically, into Wedges.
When you pop the bonnet even the Rev will recognise the engine layout.
Bring it on! (and if I get tempted....)
