Hi All,

Here's hoping you can help. I would like to replace the side stripes and logos on my wedge, as the originals are starting to deteriorate in places, mainly the stripes, I am happy where to get them from, and happy with fitting myself, but how do I get the existing stuff off, the existing stuff is vinyl not paint, I've had a bit of a pick at it where the stripe is already broken but seems very reluctant to peel off, anyone else done this, any help and advice much appreciated.

Cheers,
Rich.scratchchin

Hi Rich,

Use a hairdryer to warm up the adhesive, not too hot! The stripe should come off a lot easier. Warm up and remove the stripe bit by bit, be careful not to pull off long lengths in one go as it may damage the paint work (this hasn't happened to me, but just a thought!).

Richard I removed and replaced all my stripes just 3 weeks ago and its very easy as previously indicated warm them up with hairdryer or hot air gun and using a soft plastic filler spreader you can get the vinyl to come away easily however if, like mine after 16 years, you`ll probably find quite a lot of adhesive still left behind on the bodywork!

My solution to removing this(which I am in no way reccommending to anyone else) , as we have a GRP boatbuilding facility and use pure acetone, which we are pretty used to using on all sorts of surfaces, I used that to remove the glue but you have to be very very very careful with it. Be warned Acetone will take your paint with it!

But I guess something like automotive panel wipe or something similar would be a safer option.

Yes - don't use Acetone ..

I grabbed some and used it to remove some hylomar blue that was one the bodywork and it got the hylomar off no problem and all the paint too..

Happy - no not at all.

Gandalf is right - panel wipe or failing that a bit of t-cut will also do the job.

Buy stripes here :

and decals here (Viper - pistonheader..):

When I removed my stripes I found what I thought was remants of glue frown

However after trying to remove / t cut/ G3 with DA polisher off etc realised it was where a bodge paint job on the rear quarter had gone to the swage line, not bothered to blend in and then put the stripes over it all frown

So who knows what you may find under there smile

I was told that acetone didn't remove the original paint, by the Stolen Vehicle Squad when I did some work there, as they use it as a simple measure to try to identify the original paint colour of a vehicle - I think its meant to remove any paint expect the factory paint colour. Although with TVR's it might not apply!

There's an industrial cleaner called "Rid-a-Gum" that is actually designed to get chewing gum out of carpets, but works on any adhesive remnants. It is paint safe and gets absolutely anything sticky off. Has a lovely orange smell too! I got mine from a mate selling cleaning products, but I am sure you could track some down on the net...

I'll be bringing some stripes to BBWF & selling by the metre. I have some big reels of blue, gold and summat else.

A friend of mine can do decals if you take a decent digital photo first with a ruler for scaling - if you can't get them anywhere else.
