I thought I would pass along something I discovered while researching my 280i project. Call me nuts but the 4.0L V6 is so prevalent in the US that I couldn't resist swapping out the 2.8L (and warmup reg, cold injector, start valve, thermotime switch, Jetronic.... just about everything Bosch) for this big-bore version of the V6 and Megasquirt ECU.

At the same time I thought it would be nice to have a 5 speed. We got the short end of the stick in the US, thanks to the retesting required for importing 5 speeds (like it would make emissions worse – got to love pencil pushing bureaucrats)...

To the point: the base 2005 to present Mustang with manual gearbox has the SOHC V6 4.0L engine - also a Cologne engine. I have confirmed (gearbox in-hand) that the new Tremek 5 speed box bolts directly to the 4.0L and all the Cologne engines for that matter..

My 2006 4.0 litre Pony made 210BHP.

7 seconds to 60 in 3450lb of metal.

Good in the dry, but a TOTAL handful in the wet. Scared the hell out of myself a couple of times.

you can use the 4litre ford-explorer...here in germany you´ll get them for around 1000,-pound in average condition....

a friend of mine bought one for 900,€...he cleaned inside and polished outside (took him a weekend...the car looks nearly like new now), changed the front brake-calipers and pads, passed the local mot-test and thats it.

complete (good) engines are sold for around 200 to 300,-€

Sorry, no HP ratings yet as this project is still in the early stages. If I can't get 240HP from 244 cubes, there's something wrong. Realistically, 210-225 would make me happy.b

I picked up two very used engines for $80 and this will be one of my winter projects. Collecting bits now.

I am in the process of removing, cleaning and coating the fuel tanks at the moment so I can get a few miles on her this summer before the transformation begins. A bit of debris has made the fuel flow intermittent. What a pain pulling the tanks!!!

I'll keep you informed on the progress. Glad to hear the 4.0L may scare me. The 2.8L is very tame, though the car handles very well and reminds me of my go karting days. Yee ha!
