Hi guys,

The thread has gone on my left hand drive shaft. It looks as though it must have originally had a castle nut fitted and when it was dissassembled the thread has been damaged. Is there anyone out there who might have a replacement for some beer tokens or can point me in the right direction?

Cheers

Shaun

Could the thread be cut back in with a decent die? (as in tap & die)
If you were then to drill a hole through the shaft to accept a split pin, it should be secure enough?

As it's a bloody big thread - a tap that size would be hard to find..

So - either a propshaft specialist .. who would be used to this .. or Richard Thorpe (RT Racing) has rebuilt may wedge drive shafts..

You could have the thread re-cut on a screw thread lathe.
If not get a replacement or uprated sharf.

Given the extremely high torque on that nut, I wouldn't want to risk using a thread that had been recut. I think you need a new stub axle.

Agreed - I think it's about 250 ft lbs.. or FBT (f*cking bloody tight)

Hence talking with an expert..

RT will know where to get a new stub axle if it's needed.

Thanks guys,

Don't like the idea of re-cutting thread - I'll contact RT

There is an ad on Pistonheads for a Tasmin that is being broken. May be worth a ring. http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/220862.htm

Is it the same drive shaft for the 280i and the 350i?

Most probably, it certainly was as standard. As far as I know there is no difference in the drive shafts between trailing arm and A frame. There was an uprated version for the later cars. The car in the ad could have been uprated (very unlikely but possible) Worst case is that you will end up with an uprated driveshaft.....if you do buy and fit both and you are quids in. Cheers Steve

Hi Steve,

Mine is a 350i series 2 the car that they are coming from is a 280. I'm looking to buy the pair - so you think they should be interchangeable?

My guess would be that they probably are. As far as I am aware TVR only produced 2 types of drive shaft....the standard one and uprated one for later cars. Drop me an email with the price for the pair and it you don't want them I may, depending on the price(that way you are covered if they don't fit). Cheers Steve

Right then. I'm back from holiday. Camping in the damp British Summer. Let's just say lesson learnt... Don't kick a hedgehog when your only wearing flip-flops wink

Now to the subject... The thread is unlikely to be damaged over the whole length so you might be able to clean it up enough to reuse. That's your call!
All the driveshafts should be interchangeable with the usual caveat of getting geometries checked and possibly needing the driveshafts shimmed.
The stub is Ford Grandad (I think) and NLA unfortunately.
If you search the history you'll find multiple times where I've plugged Proptech for remanufacturing driveshafts.

Somehow I don't think the stub is granny, the earlier ones were live axle

whereas the later ones were CV joints.

Don't know then. I was going by the hub being Granada stud pattern and adding to that a dollop of assumption. Guess who could answer the conundrum?

I seem to remember hearing the stub is a Land Rover part

I have been told by Proptech that the half shaft (Stub) was made specially for the 350i and is not a standard part (Only on later TVR's with the CV joint). Proptech can't help me out so have any of you guys got one hidden under the bed or propping open the garage door that you want to swap for some beer tokens?
Other options are RT but he is on holiday until next week and a quote from another supplier for a new part, but in order to afford it I'd have to put the wife out on the streets!!

Cheers

Are you after a standard 350i one or the uprated UJ 390-onwards?

If the former I might be able to help. I have one stub that has knackered bearing cap retainers and could be re-machined to fix that.

Or I might have a complete driveshaft, also 350i.

One last suggestion - if it hasn't already been said - why not weld up the thread on your existing one, then have it machined and re-cut to the original spec? Weld is just as good as original metal.

Not sure how strong Hili coils are of that size. as you could get it re-cut to the next size down and hili coil it.

Or fit a smaller nut, and get a bigger washer.
