Hi Guys .. as you may have seen fom my other thread I am stll having problems with the 350i

1989 350i (Flapper)

Looks like it is down to the Dizzy or AFM (Hoping it is not the cam!)Does anyone have a Dizzy I could borrow to eliminate the current one as happy to buy one if I know it is the culprit?

Likewise does anyone have the dizzy part nos for the 350i?

Once we have eliminated these then I am at a loss and assume the only other culprit is the cam... any easy ways of testing for this? Compression testing appears ok? Timing checked and adjusted at various settings and fault persists.

Symptoms:

Car starts first time and idles smoothly
Revs off load to 3.5K then nothing
Underload gutless and pinks
No smoke
Sudden change to this fault overnight it just appeared one morning!
Fuel pump tested and fine
Filter changed and fine
New parts fitted: Dizzy cap (lucus)- plugs - magnicor leads - rotor arm (lucus) coil

Any further words of wisdom before i reach for the really big hammer and push the kids into the stingies!

Chris

Try shorting out the coolant temperature sensor and see if there is a difference. Better still just change it anyway. Only about 15 quid.

Varying with revs rather than load feels like an ignition fault to me.

Put an HT test lamp aka passive strobe on the king lead and see if you're getting a good spark when the problem occurs. Can you smell unburnt fuel out of the exhaust when it happens?

What's your air intake pipe like? Sometimes these can delaminate allowing the inner layer to collapse under suction and block the intake. Does the exhaust sound OK? Obviously you don't have a cat to block, but if a baffle has come loose and blocking the exhaust this could cause power loss - more likely to be power related than revs though so not very likely in this case but just keep an ear out for anything that may have changed recently.

Too much fuel can also cause strange engine running: coldstart injector, fuel pressure regulator, ecu. All can cause problems, and in the end the engine dieds off overfuelling and with wet plugs won't start. Hope it can be of help.

Edited for: weak sparks, no sparks can also have this overfuelling effect (ECU knows nothing about if the ignition is fine except for a simple signal via black/white cable with a standard dodgy connector close to the AFM).
