Can anyone confirm what the front wheel bearings are from on a 400se please?

I have searched and there seams some confusion between Mk2 Granada and Mk4/5 Cortina.

Also, is it both inner and outer I need as I only appear to have the inner fitter (Although fitted as an outer would be).

Cheers,
L33.

Popped down the local factors and asked for an early Granada. Explained what it was off, quick shufty in a parts cataloge and £9 lighter. Bought two.

Many thanks for the replies so far guys.

I only need the one, but for the sake of £7 or so, I might as well change them both.

As I was hoping not to be the case, there are conflicts between Mk2 granada and Mk 4/5 cortina. I have spoken to my local motor factors and both these bearings are similar but have a different part number!!!

I've not needed any fitting myself, but the Wedge bible states the front hub bearings are based on Ford Granada Mk2. This would make sense since the Granada hub has 5 wheel studs as on the wedge, I'm pretty sure a Mk 4/5 cortina has a 4 wheel stud hub. The front wedge brakes are also Granada based.

I've got a 1985 350i and did my bearings recently. The correct part for me was a Mk2 Granada. The outer race is the same for both the Granny and the Cortina but the inner race needs to be the Granada one.

Thanks - that makes a lot of sense. It is worrying however that some people are using the cortina bearings that are a very different size (For the inner). Perhaps they don't realise that your meant to remove the hub and also replace the inner bearing? eek

Anyhow, I've got me 2 Granada Mk2 bearing kits (2 x inner and 2 x outer bearings).

Does anyone know if I'm likely to need a bearing puller once I have removed the front brake calliper and hub assembly or should the outer bearing races come off easily with a bit of gentle persuasion with a f'ing big hammer?

Big ammer very gently........

Drifts if you have them to hand and patience. I didn't have a puller. Only needed to tease out the rotor races. Both sides came out OK with me. The bearings came off easy, small one with the rotor and the larger slipped off nice and easy after a bit of persuasion with a bit of wood.

No special tools required. I used a blunt screwdriver and a copper headed mallet. There's just enough bearing cup visible to enable you to tap them out from inside. Took about 20 minutes per cup. You dont have to be too careful driving out the old cup but the new one has to be tapped in with care if you are to avoid burring the bearing surface. Once the new cup is flush with the housing you can use the old cup to drive it further in.

Or a socket a tad smaller. I was concerned with the old race getting stuck and not being able to remove it when drifting the new race in.

When I used to do my fords, I hardly ever found any wear on the inner rac, just the outer one that was knackered , so would have quite often replcaed 2 outer for every inner that needed doing - I know cheap skate smile
