BMW straight 6 into a Wedge???
Discussion
I didnt mean take the V8 out and drop a 6 in
I was just mulling over doing something different and whether the BMW straight 6 would fit and be easy or difficult to fit, into a 280FHC chassis?
My theory is this:
If its a racecar and I intend to hillclimb it, then im already frigged anyway because of its standing as a racecar (stripped, rollcage etc) so for the first season, drop the Ford V6 in there and when Ive got the hang of climbing, maybe remove the old Ford unit and invest in a M3/M5 motor?
I think it could be quite the potent little tool, but obviously it depends on a lot of variables

Well the easiest fit will be the 24v V6, plus this has a lot of tunning options.
With BMW you not only got the problem of fitting the engine, but also the gearbox, and prop shaft.
Gearbox I have no idea about, but the length of prop used in the E30 coupe should be bloody close to the size used in the Tasmin...but props can be made With BMW you not only got the problem of fitting the engine, but also the gearbox, and prop shaft.

Whats the Cosworth put out as standard? 198bhp??
Standard M5 lump puts out around 300bhp???
Im just musing

Cosworth with minor mods and modded ECU will be abour 230BHP.Standard M5 lump puts out around 300bhp???
So be quicker than 3.5 V8's and 300BHP can be had with Cam and induction mods, you can allways turbo the v6 if you want silly power.
My friend is currently putting a coswrth lump in his 280i.
should be finished early next year.

V A G

Im just thinking outside the box mate, you know me...always something different!
Its just that the engine in the M535i (E28) puts out about 240bhp to the wheels as standard, the early E34 M5 puts out about 320 to the wheels and the big 3.8 puts out around 360 to the wheels...the engines can be had for around £2-3k
So how much would it cost to tune the Cosworth up towards that kind of power???
I like the Cosworth and thats the route I want to head down initially, but theres nothing wrong with weighing up your options

There's a 450hp turbo V6 cosworth engine in the classifieds at the mo ...
Sounds like a sorted engine and at 5k fresh, not a fortune...wonder if it would fit in a 3000M.......

Different animal, but maybe more within Scott's reach ??

Hiya Daftlad, I had a feeling the BMW engine might be a bit long for the engine bay....as I said, just a thought
Seems to have attracted some attention though

There are some misconceptions about the BMW power outputs here.
E28 M535i engine is an M30 engine, 12 valve SOHC, and develops 218bhp flywheel. REvs to 6k2
E28 M5 engine, 286 Flywheel. 6k750 standard
E34 3.6 engine, 315bhp flywheel. 6k750 standard
E34 3.8 litre M5 engine, 340BHP flywheel. 6k750 I think.
I know for a fact that the 3.6 engine will rev to 7.5K safely on totally standard hardware. Sounds glorious too.
Theyre all fecking heavy because of the utterly bulletproof bottom end and iron block, but you get throttle bodies for free with the M power engines.
Beware smokey engines: theyre not cheap to put right.
Or if youve got money to burn, theres the E39 V8 which makes 400 flywheel.
The DOHC 16 valve heads make it too wide for a wedge engine bay, I would think.
Dont do it. Too heavy, too long, and theyre a slant engine (~20 degrees over towards the offside, induction is on nearside), which can make manifolding a bit interesting.
Superb engines though.
