Based on the prices of the 400se's alone, My advice would be to go and view a few from each price category - then you'll see why price varies so much. There is a huge difference in condition of cars out there.
You can buy a wedge for peanuts, but you'll then spend many, many beer tokens getting everything sorted that needs sorting.
Generally wedges need a considerate owner who will spend time fixing faults and niggles. If they are neglected they can cost you a packet to rectify. It really all depends what your after. Something tidyish which looks generally good (but perhaps not pristine) that will need a bit of love can be had for £7k ish. A bag of nails can be had for £4k I'd advise you to steer clear as you'd spend another £5k to bring it up to the standard of the one you could have had for £7k in the first place.
Mine is up for £11k and is an exceptionally good example.

If your after a real bargain, beasties wedge is very clean. I looked over the car in July and will vouch for its condition. Don't let the price put you off - it may be bargain basement money but is worth a great deal more IMO. For the condition, I'd think its worth nearer £8k but I know he need to sell up:

I see you are in Birmingham - me too. If you want to have a look at mine and I'll show you what to look out for if you plan at looking at some, give me a shout.

Snookes - why not pop along to The Bulls Head, Meriden next Sunday for the local monthly TVRCC meet (around 1200hrs - 1400hrs)
Not sure how many wedges will be present but I will be there with my 450SE and very good chance of 1 or two fine 400SE
- might even clean it before (large quantity of Wales clinging to it at the moment!)

Hey Snookes...
Prices vary so much, and like with all cars its always so hard to know whats a honest car and which is a monkey!
All in all, the wedge needs looking after and (in my experiance) needs using to ensure things are kept up and running...
Ive been really really lucky with mine, as i bought her after she had been stored and not used for about 5 years. The guy MOT'd her before i collected, but the car was approximatly 200 miles away from where i live!
After a level check (and a complete coolant fluid loss after i put the water caps on the wrong way round!!) filled fuel and got home with NO issues at all!!
Still, shes my first TVR and after a few £****'S spent getting her closer to where i want her to be, ive never looked back!
PS-if you can afford her, Lee's wedge is stunning!!

Are those sort of prices correct? I don't think I've seen a single 350i for more than about £5.5k. Granted if you have one of the later special editions or something very, very special (15,000 dry miles...) I can see this being substantially more, but the majority of apparently tidy average mileage wedges seem to sit at £4.5-6k.I know some people will spend huge ammounts of money detailing their pedal box bolts or something and only take their car out when humidity is measured at less than 50% and the temperature is more than 14.8 degrees, but is an averagely tidy example really that expensive? Of the fifteen cars on the first page of the PH classifieds, only four are over £5.5k - three of those are 400 SE's and the remaining example is has a rather special 4.5 litre transplant.

Fair point... Do the SE's command that much of a premium then?
I presume my estimate of £4-6k was about right for a standard 350i then?
When I bought mine, earlier this year, I looked at a few examples. I had a £6k budget. Narrowed it down to a very tidy '84 350i (which I bought!) and an '87 390SE, both with under 60k on the clock.I presume my estimate of £4-6k was about right for a standard 350i then?
The 350i was up for £6k. Lots of history, new leather, resprayed professionally, new hood, just had a mechanical overhaul, new tyres, good chassis.
The 390SE was up for £5800 and was pretty tatty inside, had had a recent (and not that good) 'blow over', had Chimp wheels, virtually no history, a chassis that would need recoating and a puddle of oil in the valley.
I went for the 350i, even though my heart wanted the extra power! So in my experience, you can get a very good 350i for under £6k, but an equally good SE is probably £2 - 3k more...
Most will concur that you have to look at a few and then buy the best condition Wedge you can for your budget.

Whilst the SE's are not that much different from the i models, there are a lot of small differences and extra power. This together with the fact that only about 10% of wedges are SEs means that yes, they do command a premium of say 30 to 50%.Gassing Station | Wedges | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
