Also - I have an NCK stamped engine and I guess ARE is Andy Rouse Engines.

The vast majority of 390SE engines are NCK that was... TVR Power that is now. The first few engines and I think it is around 5 in total were sourced from Andy Rouse. I have used the word sourced deliberately as there is some dispute over whether AR actually did the engines or simply contracted them out. John Eales was certainly heavily involved in the development including that of the SEACs BTW.
The 390SE engines were a very mixed bunch as a "use what was available" policy was used. The ARE engines used slipper type piston rings and went through oil like no tomorrow. Usually used Cosworth pistons. The NCK engines followed the same policy: the original engine in my car was described as being as "we went a bit wild with that one" and with a bit of tweaking produced 250+ bhp. Wild cams and silly compression was used. Again, mine had a great tendency to pink because of this until the vacuum advance springs from a Rolls Royce were fitted which altered the advance curve enough to stop the pinking.
As for actual engine specs... difficult to tell as they varied so much. If you want to keep it original, I would call John Eales Developments as I'm sure he can supply anything that you need.

Thanks for the info fellas.
In true TVR style, looks ike there was no logic to how things were done. The engine is being rebuilt to better than new spec anyways with new cam, lifters, extra oilways, splash bar etc etc. Wont be cheap but needs doing.
I guess I just leave the original rover number on the block as the engine will be a better spec than original. Could add the ARE number somewhere else, or even add my own number to distinguish it.
All this for a 40p pin that failed in the oil pump!!!
