Headlight pods for Tasmin?
Discussion
Ive just found out that its entirely possible that the Tasmin could still be registered for the road, given that a good man from PH did some digging and found (via the chassis number) the full reg details and everything.
So (me being the silly-born bastard that I am) Im thinking of not only rebuilding the bruised testicle for racing, but getting it back on the road as an ultra hard-core plaything....basically, drive it to and from events/races, occasional PH run out etc
So what Im needing to know is this:
I will be getting a new front end at some point, but dont want the old pop up headlight units so is it possible to make/buy a set of headlight pods that could be adapted to the front end of the Tasmin in order for it to pass an MOT?????
Any help, is greatly appreciate as always

Oh and hope to be picking the engine up in the next 2 weeks

I'm sure as long as you have the right number of lights and the pattern passes the MOT, then any lights should be ok.
You could get the 7" or 9" hella's and mount then in the nose.
Or mod the front end so it has frog eye's.
Be interested to know the full details, as may be interested in converting mine once I finish racing.

I have looked for rectangular lights to fit but can only find small round on these sites

The problem is that the lights have to be 500mm above the ground though I can't remember for the moment whether that is the centre or the bottom. It's somewhere on an SVA site. This means that the lights have to be about 100mm

Looked at it myself, cibie make rectangular lights

Steve Heath had some lights like you mentioned on his purple shed, could be good to ask him what he used.

There is information here about min heights etc if it helps?

Funnily enough I have previously looked as to whether something similar to the sort of lights there is on the MG TF could be fitted into a mould that would fit into the wedge. Always had wobbly pod syndrome and would prefer an arrangement like there is on the MG TF.
Anyone think this might be worth investigating?

there is a fairly good head on piccie here

You could always go for a daylight mot, then you dont need the lights !!!
Pat smith made a set of pods that simply bolted on top of where the pods were, and unbolted them for racing, so perfectly possible...
If your wanting lights you'll be wanting a proper spec front end
I know where you can get them cheap

I had a feeling that you would know a man who can Graham

What I was thinking of, as it has now occured to me, was maybe the lights from the 400SE pods (the square ones) but recessed into the original lamp structure with a perspex sheet over them?
as said not the cheapest solution, but these can be mounted in the nose.

I've fitted these into my pods.
There the same as what's used in the Speed6 cars.

Maybe made into this kind of configuration

What about something like this???

This is what I did...

The height is a major problem because the front lip blocks most of the light. This means the lamps need to be as high as possible in the space. This then means that the lamps need to be short so that they don't protrude. The covers are polycarbonate. Don't use perspex - it shatters too easily.
I originally used bullet lamps but they were next to useless. I then switched to a twin driving light set up where the main beam was the driving lamp and dipped was fog, That works well especially as I have both coming on with main beam. I can't remember where the units came from - it was a long time ago!

One thing to bear in mind : if the car has been off road and not declared on SORN every year you might be liable for back excise duty .. just a thought. The only way round that would be for the car to have been declared scrap I think, otherwise dvla will assume it's been used on the road and want some money ?? Anyone know any different?

Probably been off the road long enough not to need sorn, My tasmins on sorn but only because we taxed it to get the number plate off. otherwise it had been off the road long enough..you can check the status on the dvla site... either way if you register it as now belonging to you you wont be liable but the previous owner will if it is liable for sorn, in which case they will have been fined by now anyway...
so
a) check its status on the web
b) register it in your name now
