knock through steering column

is a knock through the steering column normal - more like a tap actually. I had a new wedge in the early 90's and don't remember this tap. The steering wheel on the current car is nicely braced and bushed and all is working well apart from this small tap back through the column on bumpy surfaces. Could it be wear to the rack or power steering apparatus?
