I know what they are, but how do i tell what mine is, what do i look at?
(By the way it's a late 1990 400SE).

Apologies for the 'simple' question. If you don't ask...you'll never knowconfused

I would guess its almost certainly a hotwire Wayne, as, I belive, most 400`s are.
The last of the flappers were on 390SE I believe, but no doubt a few may have slipped through or been altered later , for more popping n banging!

following was cribbed from a Landy V8 engine site

"Hotwire has a fully digital ECU, flapper doesn't, and hotwire's air flow sensor is just that a hot wire where the flapper has a big flap sitting in the airflow.

The flapper system is really old now and as such can have a lot of problems purely down to its age. It also cant control the fuel as accurately purely by its very nature. It was a marvel in its day but it is well behind these days. Its also very difficult to alter the fuel curves, where the hotwire can be chipped."

Hotwire smile

An educated guess btw based on year of car

But for a more reliable method , unbolt the air filter or the plenum hose and look inside the unit. It will be obvious then of a flapper mech or resistance wire smile

Or tell us what the model number says on the top and some one will know what that equates to smile

Mine was an 89 400 with a flapper !! , but now an 89 450 with a flapper smile

Have a look at the back of the plenum. If it has a stepper motor, (black thing with wires coming out) 1st pic. It's Hotwire.
2nd pic is my old flapper..silly without a stepper. thumbup

1st pic is Simonv8ster's awsome Ginetta.

Flapper has an extra injector (cold start) on drivers side of Plenum.

There is an easier way.
The flapper has low voltage injectors, so all flapper systems will have a resister box. size of a packet of 10.

most of the 89 'F' Reg 400SE's was flapper.

Flapper unit is quite bulky with a curved quadrant where the flap moves inside.

Hot wire is more like a cylinder - a bit larger than the hose diameter

My car is fitted with Flapper type - registered 1 Jan 1990.
Lots of lovely bangs and crackles on the overrun !!

Simple and much more fun method of finding out would have been to give her a blast down some nice A roads taking your foot slightly off the right pedal every few secs , amazing pops and crackles if she's a flapper , I miss mine very much !
