The heart and soul of MOH is at this time laying in pieces on my mates garage floor, I have been given a shopping list of parts she needs and a price for them of £320 +vat so thought I would run them by you lot and see if I can save a few bob.
Set standard piston rings (AE)
Big end Bearings (Vandervall)
Main Bearings (Vandervall)
Thrust washers
Full Gasket set (Payen)
Cam Chain kit

Also is there anything else we should do while the lump is out ( clutch is sorted)
Thanx in advance Ian

If you are changing big ends etc.
Then I'd pos get the cam bearings changed / looked it.

Also get the cam checked, and pos changed. make sure you get rubber rocker cover gaskets.

your need some holomyre blue (spelling)

If you taking the lump out
have a look at the core plugs

Also depends on how hard your going to push the lump after the re-build, as you may want to fit studs to caps, and heads.

While the heads are off have a good check of the Exhaust threads. they are a common thing to fail.

also check the manifolds, make sure the mating surfaces are flat.

depends what you want to end up with and how much you want to spend, as it can be endless.

Things I would think of while at it:
- drill two holes to aid oil returning toward the oilpump drive gears
- get the block very very clean before putting it back together
- new cylinder head bolts or studs as mentioned before
- composite head gasket
- investigate x-bolted if going for high output/high revs
- replace oil pump
- new cam followers and cam (only if this hasn't been done recently)
? balancing (again only if high output and/or high revs are on your list)
? improved cylinder heads with better flow

Agree: We can go on for ever.
Easy way out is to have a nice one build by the likes of rpi for example.....
Perhaps they can re-use the existing 'available' block and parts.

Half the fun can be Doing it yourself.

Also more of a sense of achievement. esp as they are fairly easy to work on, lots of parts avl. and lots of info.

Well the answer to both questions are both related, the engine was designed for the LR, with low rev's and high torque.

with fast rev's you can get too much oil in the cam area, so the holes give extra drainage, also putting the holes there, move this excess oil to where it's most needed.

Shortening the trumps improves the BHP but lowers the torque, better for a light weight car.

Due to the oil pump in non-serpentine engines been driven of the camshaft via the distributor axle, the gears (especially high revs) are under a lot of strain and this & the gear lubrication is the only weak spot in the RV8 design (there is another which is the cylinder heads are not flowing well but that is another thing). The holes aid the return of oil via this gear area and make the engine more long lived due to the pump keeps functioning and distribution is ok. It is a tip in the wegde bible and on RV8 tuner websites and not invented by me.

A start regarding oil flow mod info can be found/asked from here:
http://www.v-8.org.uk/tuneup.htm

You can also find it in David Hardcastle RV8 books with pictures.
Hope it helps.
