Can somebody tell me when the earliest is you can tax a car so the disc runs from the start of the following month rather than the start of the current month?

I believe that if the car is already taxed it is 2 weeks. If the car is declared SORN you can't tax it part way through a month without paying for the whole month.

Looks like I will have to wait until the start of next month to put her back on the road again!

This has just been a topic in the Daily Telegraph letters page. The answer is (for an already taxed vehicle), not more than 15 days beforehand, with certain provisos:

1) If paying online, that the website is working ... and you're prepared to pay an extra £2.50 for the privilege.

2) Otherwise, that you still have a Post Office within walking distance, or you still have public transport to get you to (and back from in the same day) the nearest one ... and are prepared to stand in line for hours just for the clerk to go home before it's your turn.

3) Otherwise, if your Post Office is now in WH Smiths, that you are prepared to pay by card as they won't take cheques for the full amount of most vehicle tax.

Hutber's Law in full operation!
