Seem to have an issue coming from the rear of the car as was checking it before next weekend.

Geting a clunk on takeoff, whicj#h is now louder than normal.

Jacked the car up and with the handbrake on you can move the propshaft about 1/8 inch before as wheels locked. Does that sound about normal ?

Also with handbrake on, tried to move driveshafts, but no noticable movement in uj, so they would seem ok?

But when rocking the wheel at 6 o'clock postion one is moving noticable more than the other, anyone know how much they should move. This sounds like it could be a bearing issue ?

Anyone know if the bearings are able to be re tightned ( and then split pin'd etc) or you reckon it needs a new one, not likely to get ordered and fitted before next weekend now frown

6:00 o'clock movement is bearing or driveshaft, need to try and see if movement is between wheel & hub = bearing or if hub is moving = driveshaft all assumes A frame bushes are OK
Rear wheel bearing has solid inner race so no adjustment assuming it is tight.

Cheers for that, looks like uj might be knackered than as hub case moves as well. Bearing seems tight, as can't get nut undown without finding the 6 foot scafold pole.

Oh well have to drive slower with out any drag starts next week smile Not changed uj on this one yet so got to try and remember how to take drive shaft of as can't even find my bible at the mo frown

Anyone know if drive shaft is bolted at both end, I know there are 4 bolts holding it to the dif, but since can't remember how it attaches to the hub carrier ? Is it again on bolts or a spline set up ?

Paul - it's a huge nut (36mm I think) at the driveshaft end.

Very big torque - about 250 ft lbs.

Big extemsion bar needed (scaffold pole) etc..

I have the socket if you need it.

Yeah I got the 3/4 socket set for that, but seem to recall there were 4 more holding the driveshaft to the spline, so it sound like there isn't.

Tried undoing the nut yesterday with my 3 foot breaker bar to no avail, so need to find my 6 foot metal bar to slot over it now yikes

There are 4 nuts holding the driveshaft to the disc/diff and one big nut holding the wheel / bearing on.

The driveshaft just pulls out towards the fuel tanks.

You don't need to undo the hub nut to change the UJ's. Just undo the bottom link and the shock at the bottom.

Yeah pretty sure I changed this way on the 350 as don't remember taking whole shaft off.
But I think this time, I'll remove both drive shafts and get both uj replaced by someone else at great expense frown

If your paying anyway, have them checked for straighness & balance - most drive shaft specialists do this anyway - it eliminates 1 source of high speed vibration - RT did mine but he sends them out to a specialist.

Must admit that that is my prefered solution is to remove them and have an expert strip, rebuild and balance them .. sometimes paying someone an hours labour to have a purfect job is money well spend.

Paul if you only need to get the UJ changed you can bring the shafts and UJ's down to me and you can use my 10 Ton press. done the prop shaft on it no problem.

As Alan said left the hub connected and disconnect from the suspension and rear disc.

Have to dig out my spare uj (bought years ago for another Wedge - and hopefully the same ) take it along to BBWF and then if you take your press along we can fix it there smile

Must be enough volunteers to suggest which best way to remove bits at EC yikes

Paul,

Not had to do one for many years but the last time I just got RT to supply part (measured the cup size) to confirm it's the same (350i had smaller UJ's)

Then used yellow pages (propshaft specialist) to find a local specialist to fit and balance.

Is the cup size diameter of inside of yokes ?
As was reading on some other makes they also put different thickness of circlips in there to stop any movement ?

Circlip thickness would only affect the length not the diameter.

So the thicker cirlips are stopping sideways diameter then on maybe mismatched uj and different yokes ?

ummm re-thinking not sure how you can fit thicker circlips as they go in the recess but the diameter of the UJ's have to be right as they are compression fitted. circlips are only really there as a safty guard, it takes 3-5 tons to move them IIRC.
