HI guys, what a time to notice a problem!

There is a distinct ticking which increases with engine revs, it seems to be coming from the left side of the engine. I can hear it more when driving past something which reflects sound, walls etc...

Engines done 32,000 miles and has been fully serviced not long ago.
It doesn't use oil or smoke at all, and performance feels ok.

Not sure what oil TVR Barnet use but i'm sure it's the correct grade.

Tappet?

Thx.

Probably exhaust manifold gaskets. Get them changed out first, only a couple of quid. yes

Agree with Wyn or maybe cracked manifold, check the easy bits first.

you may want to fit a set of ARP stainless bolts, they have much smaller heads with a flange, much easier to get a spanner on. they are about £35-30 though. if not RPI do a stud and gasket set.

Methinks your not taking this seriously Alan...wink

Must admit, leaky manifold did pop into my head and i've had a look..difficult to tell tbh. The manifolds look sealed to the engine with red mastic??

Hmmm. Needs further investigation then.

cheers all thumbup

Get a friend to block the exhaust with rag and see if you notice the ticking getting louder..

Just torque up the manifold bolts and see if it goes away - easy. Well, apart from that one underneath...

The clue could be in the recent service?

I once had a similar noise. Turned out one of the plugs hadn't been tightened up. It was tapping up and down on the threads as compression was reached.

Your original remark of "Tappet" could be near the mark. although 32k seems a bit soon. If a cam follower stops rotating it will wear the cam lobe & will tick.As the lobe wears, the tick will get louder. It happened to me @ 60k

make sure you use the right Torque as it's quite easy to strip the threads in the heads.
