Rolling roads?

Had a couple of issues sorted at Barnet on my 450 SEAC but they are struggling to get the fueling fully sorted.
Problem is they set the tickover and CO as best as can, but if the engine is left to tickover until fans cut in it starts going lumpy to the point it cuts out. If you catch the throttle manually it seems to be ok. I think that the SEAC's always were a little lumpy on tickover/cam weren't they?
The plugs were also pretty black, so it seems that's an indication of running rich?
The engine was fully re-built 800 miles back but i think it still has the original cam (whatever that is). Doesn't mention the cam type?
Also it has an ACT carbon plenum and trumpets - if that makes a difference..Any advice Tim?
Is there much that can be done with flapper type V hotwire? I've heard lots about Mark Adams chipping but surely that's more relevant with 'mappable' hotwire ECU's?
Is there anything that can be done with flapper systems?
Anyway, at least the fuel isn't leaking all over the engine now and the cooling fan kicks in properly. Just think the next step is to get her on a rolling road to see what's what.
Sorry for all the questions..any other advice appreciated guys.
Should get her back soon..
Ps: Does anyone know Lee Hodgkins (a previous owner), or if he is on Ph's? It would be nice to glean additional information on the beasty!

Idle is about 1000rpm, but the guys at Barnet TVR say my tacho is over reading a little, It shows 1100-1200.
Edit to add: It seems to almost choke itself rather than a power load pushing it over the edge. Just gets slowly lumpier and lumpier..until it cuts?
I think they are a little restricted to what they can do now hence i think a rr session might be the way to go?
cheers

Where does Mark ply his trade Steve? Austec or PE in Uxbridge?
Can't wait to get her back!! BBW!
Think i asked Rev this but i've forgot already..
He use to go to a few garages including Austec, that was a few years ago though.I would email him, book it in let him have a play and general setup, then he will have a good idea how he can improve your mighty beast. Can't wait to get her back!! BBW!

You have his contact details.. not sure where he works..Can't wait to get her back!! BBW!

The fueling problem is a very complicated one .. I could talk to you about it for an hour and not repeat myself once..
Beware of false symptoms .. like sooty plugs. That obviously means too rich.. but not necessarily at tick over.
You need a 4 gas analyser..
One thing that engines do when the tick over gets low is the fuel drops out of the air .. making it lean .. which does not burn well .. so the mixture at tick over needs to be even richer to compensate.
My advise is to learn to live with it for now and be prepared to spend a bit with someone like MA to get to the bottom of it.
Ok thanks chaps.
Plan is to get the SEAC back and put another couple of hundred miles on it to make sure all is settled and run in.
Then get her on the rr with Mark. I think a proper mapping session would sort the issue properly.
In the mean time i don't think there is anything to overly concern myself with. Everything else is fine.
Sorry, do you know what cam the 450 SEAC's have? There is no reference to it in the engine build paper work i have? Though the re-build receipt i have runs to 3 pages!
Next job to do is sort an exhaust from ACT, and then I'll probably get the rr sorted once that's on.
Thanks again.

Hi Wayne
When you had the engine rebuilt you said you they used the same cam, there is a good chance the cam has flat spots on it, the oridunal cam is a kent 235 race spec, if your running moble1 oil there will probly be a lob or 2 missing like mine was, poor splash properties to lub the cam.
Ive been throught a lot with the engine in my 420SEAC
Ive had to: injectors cleaned, new cam, down graded from the full race 235, rebuilt ecu by mark adams, reconed flapper, 2 dizys, and lots of other little things.
The best thing to start with would be a krypton tunner, this will look at the electronics and see if the dizy is stable in its timming.
The flapper may need to be recalibrated to the engine and fueling needs.
I would look for a good tuner and have the engine a good look over.
Good luck

It doesn't mention anything about the cam in the build report i have, but i'm assuming they would have inspected the cam shaft IF it's even the original..for wear before re-installing?
I may well contact the garage who built the engine and see what they say.
Campbell..
That's alot to go through! Little bit scary.
Thanks for the tips though, hopefully i won't have half those problems!

I really can't imagine the engine having been re-built without a NEW cam.I may well contact the garage who built the engine and see what they say.

Even a tight fisted Yorky like me would have paid for that...false economy otherwise.

Take a look at this V8 cam comparison table ..
http://www.btinternet.com/~jon.wolfe/kentcamdata.h...
The Hydraulic 234 is the SEAC cam (unless mechanical was specified) and it's very will..
compare valve lift and duration with other cams .. only the M256 tuscan race cam is similar..
Then again - many will have had the cam changed at some point..
The only way to be sure is to measure the lift with a dial guage..

I have checked through all the paperwork/build receipts etc.. and it does state the cam shaft was replaced, but it only shows as 'performance cam' as recommended by TVR.
So still none the wiser what make/grind it is?
Thanks for the info Alan, i will look into this.
I've tried an old email for Lee Hodgkins who owned the car when it was re-built but the address is no longer in use. Would have been good to glean more info.. Anyone know him?
Does seem in the past that the engine had suffered bore wash due to over fueling which was a factor that led to the engine re-build. It also states they had issues sealing the carbon plenum, so it was sent back to ACT for re-sealing, which was all sorted.
Just needs setting up properly now by the sound of it, which only a proper session on a RR will sort.
Just an oil change to do today and then collect her from Barnet TVR.
