Just about got the vx red top in position and thinking about the exhaust is it best to try and keep everthing in the confines of the transmission tunnel or hang a decent exhaust below?

I had the exhaust slung below the chassis. One large silencer down the middle, then split into 2 just before the diff with another 2 silencers in each tee. The problem is the clearance of the big silencer running down the middle, mine grounds out even on a cambered road. This prevents you from driving fast on anything but the smoothest roads. There may be heat & clearance issues keeping it within the chassis but I would try and do it this way if possible. Or.. maybe run pipes to the back 2 silencers and do away with the middle silencer. Cheers Steve

The worst place to have low ground clearance is in the middle (between the axles). If you have to have a silencer there then have skid plates fitted front and back so it can take the knocks it's going to get. Listen to Steve's advice as he knows more than most about grounding exhausts LOL (Hi Steve how you doing?)

The previous owner of my 450SE put in a tailored system. There are two pipes the length of the chassis. They have been slightly squeezed and fit alongside the rails and therefore well clear of the ground. There are then two pipes out of the rear. I know it is not standard, but there you go.shoot

Yeah about what i was thinking a bit more effort but I only have a single ali fuel tank on the right so straight pipe down the tunnel and a box in the spare fuel tank place and a small bike can as a tail pipe can,t wait to get this on the road

To confirm, mine has twin tanks. I did not know that it is an option - your reference to a spare tank. There is a single filler with twin vents. I can look further if you wish.

I thought they all had twin tanks (with twin fillers as per XJ6 on the earliest cars), except for the 2+2s.

I think that it looks like both tanks have been removed and an alloy one fitted on the right (viewed from the rear) so I have space on the left previously filled by the original tank. I think the previous owner degz had this done, fuel capacity is only good for about 170miles.

Pictures:

copy their location from your storage site (photobucket, etc), using the 'direct' choice of urls.

Then...[pic] (paste location) [/pic]. (No gaps) smile

a bit of technical stuff the bellhousing is made using a vauxhall f20 gearbox cut and then milled level with a 10mm alluminium plate welded on standard vx pressure plate and rs2000 clutch plate sachs thrust bearing type 9 5 speed box and the sump is standard red top again cut and with 4mm allumiuim plate, the hole for oil level device has a round plug welded in. Just made and welded the engine mounts so waiting for them to cool before painting

The VX Red top is a very good engine, but why would you take out a V8 and fit a 4 cylinder. There are a few V8 alternatives that could be used if you were fed up with the RV8.

If it had a v8 originally I would have kept it but its a mk1 200 dhc which had a 2L pinto and even with webers felt very underpowered I like the vx motors got one in my westy with good injection which makes a lot of power, so my idea is to have this as a reasonably economical classic I can use everyday.
