Hello,

I recently purchased a TVR here in the states. It is missing a few parts that I hope someone can help me with. The car is a 1986 TVR 280i

I am looking for the following parts:

1) (2) complete rear axle assemblies (I plan on upgrading to a V-8, so 350i axle assemblies will work well for me.)
2) Complete pedal box assembly for a manual transmission car. (Car was originally equipped with an automatic transmission and I am converting over to a manual transmission)
3) Passenger side door glass (Vandals broke into the car while it was being stored)

I would appreciate any help with these parts. Please let me know what you may have and price with shipping to the states.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

For parts or help you can find a link under the sticky 'hard to find MOT parts'. This is a US company.

For v8-conversion of a tasmin in the US, think that I have seen/read information on pistonheads and probably also with a link to a US-site with information. Contacting someone that has done a conversion could give you a headstart from my point of view.

Hi Steve - Welcome to TVRs in the states. Rear end hardware is heavy. I'd try to find what you need here first - the rear end is mostly Jag bits. Have you checked with Marshall Moore? Also - there are a lot of TR 6, 7 & 8 parts. Maybe the peddle box too.

There have been some nice V-8 conversions - both Ford and Rover. Have you looked at the TVR section of the British Car Forum.

What kind of brake upgrade are you thinking of?

You have a guy over there who's put a 302 Ford in, and gave a good account on here as to how he did it...I tried to find it for you, but I've forgotten his board nic. It appeared to be pretty straightforward.

Diff and rear brakes are late 70's Jaguar XJ6, and plenty of those in the States.smile

I don't think the diff ratio would need changing.

Thanks for the replies. I am planning on putting in a 5L. Ford Mustang V8 and transmission. Looks like I can source the engine and transmission for around $750. They are very plentiful over here. I have seen postings from two people who have done it over here. One was "302 Wedge" and the other was "tr7andtvr" (Andy Evans). I have tried to contact both, but Andy was the only one who responded. He has been very helpful with supplying photos, parts information, etc.

My two biggest issues so far are converting the peal box from a single pedal automatic unit to a two pedal unit with a clutch pedal. There are plenty of TR7's and TR6's over here, so I will look at those first.

My other big problem is the rear end. A friend of mine has a Jaguar differential with rotors and calipers. I just need to go pick it up. I still need to find both rear axles. They appear to be TVR specific items. When the rear differential was removed from my car the previous owner disassembled the outer u-joint at the wheel and left the axle stubs in place. I just need to find a pair of used axles or I could make my own if I can identify the u-joint flanges. If flanges from a Triumph drive shaft or axles would work, I can have them cut out and new shafts made up with the proper center to center length for the u-joints. Does anyone know the length of the axles? The best dimension would be the length from u-joint center to u-joint center. I looked at the Jaguar rear axles, but they utilize a one piece construction and will be difficult to properly shorten.

'302 Wedge' was the guy I was thinking of. Have you done a search on here ?
His posts were 3 or 4 years ago.

It might be worth importing the driveshafts, complete with UJs...preferably the bigger 400SE ones from here.

I pondered a 302 ford conversion in 2007 and got an email from a guy, in the US, who said he could help. If you email me, I can send his contact info.

I converted my 280i automatic to manual last year. In my car the clutch pedal simply was cut short but still in place. All I had to do was welding pieces of pedal from another car to the clutch lever and the brake pedal lever. The clutch master cylinder mounting place was also present so it was all very easy to assemble. Don't know however if some owner before me did a conversion from manual to auto or if this was done by the factory. It is also a USA spec car so maybe your lucky.

I'm 99% sure the pedal box was a TVR-specific item. The pedals themselves may well have been proprietary items (probably Ford) but the box itself is a basic sheet-metal fabrication that wouldn't take much copying or adapting. It's just a solid steel bar of about 3/4" dia. with the pedals pivoting on it.
The auto version probably just has spacers in place of the clutch pedal!

if you cant source a suitable pedalbox within a short period i would buy a standard (bias) box...like this one (i guess you can source a similar item also in US):
