Trying to get a bit of heat out of vents! (more importantly to my feet!)

First job tonight was to sort the fan switch out, which only normally runs it at low speed.

Removed it from the car and thought that maybe the contacts need a clean. Wrong! The switch has pretty much burnt out and will need replacement. What car do these originate from?

Also neither of the adjuster dials are marked and as of yet I haven't worked out which is which and what position is max heat! I've tried them in every different way and still can't get it!

Thanks

James

Worked out the positions now as I managed to do a semi overhaul of the switch and have had the fan on full speed.

Looking at the lower discharge points, I think that my feet are still going to be excluded from the benefits of a functioning heater!

Well done.smile

My crappy little new lights switch cost 35 blinkin quid ! eek

The way gas is going it will be cheaper to go for a drive than put the central heating on. cry

I was out for a blast this afty, windows and top-down (of course).

Heater works fine, but my hands were nearly frozen to the steering wheel...gloves next time. hehe

Came back with another indecent speed recorded on the satnav...just overtaking on the dual carriageway hociffer, and didn't notice such detail at the time. redface

Went for a blast earlier, topless of course biggrin

It was nice to have a heated left knee, but my feet were still numb!

My brother was following in his M3 evo and commented on the flames from my exhausts hehe, makes it all worth it!

Little tip for you - stuff a rag in the passengers side heater outlet vent. But don't tell my Missus I do that hehe

I can now get heat onto the windscreen and my left knee, but the center vents only seem to blow cold air. Is this normal?

I am going to have a go at re-directing the air to my feet with some flexible ducting. I know I probably sound like an old women (I'm only 28!), but I keep getting cramp in my foot!

Sounds like you are driving far too slowly. scratchchin

Keeping the tyres warm is much more important. hehe

I also have this warm air problem but I tend to find that speed makes the situation worse! When I'm pushing it along the temp gauge shows that the temperature falls to somewhere around 50/60 degrees and I get at best Cool air out of the vents. However, when I'm pottering around town (not that often!) the temp gauge comes up to around the 90 degrees and I get lovely warm air through the vents.

Is it a case of ‘They All Do That Sir’ or is this large temp range between high and low airflow over the engine not normal? I too could do with warm air at speed so is there something that I could try that will not cause increased/temp problems at lower speeds?

Cardboard covering half of the rad scratchchin?

Might be worth a go!

Ooh that takes me back. hehe A good piece of cardboard used to be a compulsory piece of kit in winter, on the old Moggy thou or whatever (mechanical always-on fans then).

BUT you could also buy a neat little adjustable rad' blind that you could work from INSIDE the car whilst MOVING ! Positively space age ! hehe

Richard, it sounds like your thermostat might be stuck open - driving too cool isn't very good for the engine either.

THe thermostat is fairly easy to change assuming the bolts come out of the block OK.

Ditto with the rag up the passenger side vent - you get much more air on the driver's side ;^)

Thanks Adam! I also remembered to bring the Steve Heath bible into work with me today for a read. Between the two of you I have a little list of things to investigate this weekend! Thanks again.

A good way to diagnose the thermostat is to hold the top hose after starting from cold, if it starts to get warmish straight away then it's probably stuck, if it stays cold while the heater hose warms up then it's working.

Some wedges had a valve under the bonnet that you operate manually (like on the air filter housing on cars back in the old days). If you have one see if changing the postion helps. If you get some warm air in the cabin it should be already ok or you don't have the valve. Then it is probably the ducting under the dash that isn't ok enough to route it to where it is supposed to go and you have dashboard heating (as in floor heating in houses) but with less effect ;-)
