Gearbox failure
Discussion
Just a quick thread to see if anyone's got any ideas.
Me and my old man were out in his wedge october time on our way to Silverstone. 80mph down the motorway, holding steady when 'bang' followed by loss of drive. We pulled up by the side of the road and restarted the engine, pushed it into gear, lifted of clutch and it popped straight back out. Held it in gear and lifted off and it grinded then pop out of gear.
Needless to say, Tow truck home.
You can push the car in neutral and it moves fine, you can put it into gear as long as you've got the clutch in, but as soon as you put any load on it, pop! This is the same for all gears.
Any ideas? It's got to be gearbox but anyone have any experience with this?

Same thing happened to me a few years back (see my pic in the wedgepics thread on the M1 hardshoulder
).
In my case it was going to cost £600 in parts and labour to repair the gearbox (not including removing the engine in order to remove the box), so I went for a replacement instead.
In the end I sourced a replacement box from a lowish mileage griff for about £150 iirc - it had broken casing so that needed to be swapped to the other one, then it was engine out, box out, new one in, engine back in and loads of pounds passed to my local garage for the labour
.
I understand it is possible to remove the gearbox without removing the engine by cutting some of the chassis - but I was never going to go down that road.
Also at the time it was hard to find a replacement 2nd hand gearbox for a 2wd RV8 - there are plenty knocking around for 4wd but not for 2wd. Look on ebay and all the usual places there are several options.
The end of the story was that with the griff box fitted it drove like having a new engine and service as well.... my old one was obviously shagged!
I hope yours is something minor, but if it's not be prepared for a load of hassle (and or cost) getting it out of the car and loads more replacing repairing it - sorry about that mate, I feel for ya having been through it myself!

The bearings (shaft end) can fail on these. Had this happening to me on a rover sd1. Fourth gear was still ok and could drive home with a rattling noise like all box internals in a dishwasher. A replacement it was for me. LT77 boxes are not to difficult to find (yet) and engine out is as easy as without (from what I read on the forum).
It could still be that a repair is possible, companies specialised in the LT77 can tell you this and then either repair/overhaul or source a replacement for you.
