noisy rv8

Not really a wedge problem this but here goes.
My fathers rv8 has developed a strange noise,it sounds like big end but is more tinny pitch, has anyone ever had a tappet colapse? if so what does it sound like?

If it sounds like a tappet noise, it could be a slipped liner in one of the bores. when my old P6 Rover did this it only did it when hot.
Noticed it when i removed one of the heads and there was a perfect circular ring which had been punched out of the tin head gasket!
had to have a new liner put in by an engineering irm,only to have it happen to another cylinder 6 months later!!
in the end got a second hand SD1 lump and used that.
But... Hopefully it might just be a worn Cam/lifter....hopefully;o)
