There is not rubber trim on : 350i / 390 / 400 / 420 / 450 and SEAC's .. on the front screen anyway. It's just in there flush with mastic.

Hi
As reverand say there was not a factory fitted trim. But there are some cars around with a trim fitted, which finishes the car off. I have seen two with it and have also had two with it! Give me an e-mail and I will send you some pics etc!

Hi lads,
I've got a 350i wedge and it had the rubber trim on,i'm in the process of taking it off because it was'nt fitted right and causing delamination in the corners. So i'm going to flush it off in RTV sealant.
cheers john..

You sure about that alan?
My '88 390 had a J-section rubber strip around the windscreen(cut at 45 Degrees at each corner),and AFAIK it may have been original (as there was an original "do not exceed 2500rpm until engine is warm " sticker on it. When I enquired at my local TVR dealers ,he couldn't get the original trim, but he did get me a trim off a later model(tuscan I think),which autoglass kindly fitted for me when I had the screen replaced in '02

Yep. If it's just flush with mastic then this is an ex-factory bodge.

Eeeerr, right, I'm still not sure, having read the above if my 450 should have screen rubber or not!

Mine has

The seal on mine would appear to have been cut off and then just re-applied with a mastik type stuff, probably when the car was re-sprayed before I owned it.

Thing is, I want to get a new screen, is it held in by a seal at all or is it just bonded in? (The bible tells me that it's just bonded. If it is just bonded what bonding should I use and where can I get it from? (An on-line source would be good)

Also, I have removed and fitted windscreens on other cars in the past, is the Wedge screen a DIY job or should I get it one by a pro?

Any help. advice, suggestions appreciated, thanks.

Your screen looks exactly as it should. The mastic type seal will help to hold the screen in place and the rubber trim is there to make it look smart.

Maaaaany moons ago... I recall a similar discussion. My early Tasmin had its screen bonded in with mastic on the 'flat' BUT there was a gap around the glass. I thought it looked wrong so I filled it flush with black mastic and within months the screen started to go milky. At the '97 'Back Homee' meet I did the factory tour and was talking about it to (IIRC) John Mlecek who confirmed that the channel was originally left clear. When I had the car resprayed I got the paintshop to dig the mastic out and subsequently left the channel clear.
My 390 has the mastic-with-trim finish and the glass is milky in places.
I suspect that pockets in the mastic (due to age, shell flex etc.) trap water and capillary action takes it into the edge of the glass - it's a laminate of course so there are separate layers of glass and plastic. If the channel is left clear the water can't get trapped.
