Seeing as they are not Mondeo mirrors I thought I'd better start a new thread wink

Got home from work early today, so thought that I would crack on with the mirror upgrades.........

Still a bit of 'making good' on it as you can see, but I think that they are massive improvement!

(ignore the shirinking leather around the top of the dash wink )

Looking after the kids tonight as the wife's gone out, so was bored!

Looking good. How are you planning to close up the gaps? Expanding foam, shape, filler & paint? Never tried it, but seems to work for the car body modders.

Haven't quite worked out how yet!

I was thinking ali. mesh (the really thin stuff from Halfords), which I can bond onto the inside of the plastic and shape it as required before adding body filler and painting as one.

Although I like the idea of expanding foam........

Don't use ali mesh and filler as this will definitely crack at some point in the future. Instead, use fine fibre glass mat and resin over the top then use some filler to smooth it out before prime and paint.

Cut the mat to the desired shape which only needs to be rough. Mix up some resin and brush the inside of the gap and apply the fibre mat and mold into place - then apply your resin in stages until hard. Rub down with a bit of 60 grit, apply some filler and sand to the required shape before painting.

Drop me an email if you need any more tips

P40 is ready-mixed chopped fibre and resin, with hardener.

I used it for fixing the peg on my Targa top (+ a perforated steel plate).

Been doing this sort of thing for 40 years...without cracks. wink

Looking good.
Was hoping not to need to consider this myself, but some `....` has hit the driverside mirror with his foot! Was parked outside at home and never had any issues ever(this is Belgium not the UK). Still ok a week ago and now need to have a think of how can it be fixed or is a replacement required...
Your installation looks good, but still prefer the original type of fixing.

Agreed...except if you are using P38 that is.

I ended up using glass matting and resin...........

And added some P38, ready for primer.

Primed up and on the car. The joint where the mirror meets the A post still needs a bit more work, as does the old mirror holes in the door. (I could cheat with both wink , TVR syle black sealant along the joint and a big PH sticker over the old mount holes..)

Still got to do the other side, colour coat and work out the wiring.......

Great job - good to see you went the matting and resin route. By the way, are the mirrors electric and which car did you salvage them from?

Thanks.

They are electric and heated, from a MK4 Fiesta (these are brand new from ebay £25 incl P+P)

ETA. I don't know what the misses has done to the camera but the white seems a bit....well...err... white

James,

Any further pics of the finished job?

Are you completely happy with the improved vision and I image adjustment as compared to the originals?

I no longer own the car unfortunately as I've came over all curvy wink

The visibility was massively improved, but bare in mind that the old girl previously sported the earlier style mirror, which had seen better days. They were heated as well but I never got round to wiring them up.

I was very pleased with the end result tbh, but as I was in a rush to sell the car I sprayed them Matt black (the Wedge had been resprayed in a Subaru colour and I couldn't be arsed to get a match mixed up) they would have looked better body coloured.

I'll see if I can find any finished pics.........

The beauty of these mirrors is the availability of new glass if required.
