Can anyone recommend an oil to use in my 390se. I've read that many Oil manufacturers are reducing zinc content to reduce damage to catalytic convertors, but this has the side effect of knackering our cams in short order, thus many modern oils are not suitable.
I have previously used Valvoline VR1 20/50 , but the only supplier i know of in my area have just jacked the price from 25 pounds to 37 pounds for 5 litres! I could really do with a less ridiculously priced alternative.

Cheers Leigh, can you remeber which oil it was? I've had a look at Rock's catalogue here; http://www.rockoil.co.uk/Road&Race.pdf and can't see which one it might be.

Mmm the plot thickens, I had gone with Valvoline VR1 previously as it seems to be recommended by quite a few garages and forums, however there seems to be opinion to the contrary on this forum; http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.ph...
I'd quite happily spend the money on good oil, the original post was due to being a little miffed with a 50% price rise.

I use VR1 as it is recommended by my mechanic who is a RV8 specialistI'd quite happily spend the money on good oil, the original post was due to being a little miffed with a 50% price rise.
He is ex F1 Stock Car World Champion using his own prepared engines
and still prepares about 5 of the top 10 racers today.
He says he has used VR1 for years and has never had an engine
come back in to him for servicing with any problem with the oil.
It also isn't horrifically expensive
I also would recommend and know Millers Oils are very good as they are local
to me and I know many of the expert guys as they are also customers of my printing business
and specialise in Classic and Motorsport oils and 2 divisions of their business

The trouble is that like soap powder oils change their formulation and keep the name the same so the modern equivalent does not contain the same amount of zinc or phosphorous that they used to,Mobil get round it by having racing oil( 15/50) which contains more than most, other Mobil oils do not contain high levels as modern engines don`t require it,in short check formulation with manufacturers to be certain.Tempus

I'm current using the Strata Premium, as need a 100% mineral oil, as the engine has got new liners rings and shells, and all the info I have read says you should not use synthetic oil on a engine with new rings etc. as it can stop them bedding in.Ta

)) for the last five years and have used the car for trackdays on quite a few times and have never noticed pressure dropping, and the old oil always comes out minus any metal!
