Hi,
My 280i has blown a head gasket.

Not a problem, heads are off and a new gasket set has been purchased from ebay.

However i thought i would re-seat the valves while the heads were off and the rubber seals appear to be different from those provided in the gasket set. Does anyone know what part number the correct ones are or why they might be different ?

Thanks
colin

Colin,

There are many different versions available, but they fall into two categories, either the 'umbrella' type, this is a plastic cup upturned up with a hole in the center to push over the valve stem. Then there is the more conventional seal that pushes onto the of the valve guide sealing the valve stem.

I use the umbrella type (on the inlets only) my heads have new guides/valves so sensible clearances ie. not worn, so I'm happy for a little oil to get down the guide for lubrication, my engine is turbocharged so when its on boost there is a positive pressure pushing the oil back out of the inlet guide.

The conventional type allow little or no oil into the guide, and if your engine is a real hot engine you could opt for stem seals from an Escort turbo (Mk3) the OE Ford items have a higher temperature rating, but remember there will be very little oil getting to the guides.

On a standard 2.8 I'm sure you would be fine with either type.

Regards,

Chris.
