Hi,
Shortly after getting my 280i on the road after a long restoration.

Its started blowing water through the exhaust not a little a lot. First thought was a head gasket but that has now been sorted. does anyone have any ideas, as i say its not just a little bit of water its faily pumping it through the exaust.!!

I did have a problem with the auxilary air sensor (well the mounting bracket) which i broke and fitted a replacement from a capri >?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Had the head gasket actually failed? Maybe that wasn't the problem. I would suggest pressure testing the cooling system to confirm you have a leak, and then try to work out where the leak is from. For example you might have a flaw in the cylinder head.

You say there's a lot of water coming out, what do you call a lot? Is it coming out as steam? Is the coolant level dropping?

Assuming it really is blowing coolant out the exhaust, it's clear there must be a passage between the cooling system and the exhaust, and there are only so may places that can happen:

cracked / slipped liner
head gasket
flawed/porus/cracked head

A cooling system pressure test would be the first step to confirm there is actually a leak (from the symptoms it seems very likely there is) and by listening/watching you may be able to track it down. For example with the plugs out, if one cylinder fills up with water that gives you a pretty good clue where to concentrate the search.

You can DIY fairly easily by putting a bike valve through an old pressure cap.

It is just some water out the tail pipe or does white smoke accompany it?

When my wedge is cold it always dibbles a bit of water, but once up to temperature
it goes away.

Any engine I've ever seen leaking coolant from the heads or block was always accompanied by
white smoke from burning anti-freeze.

How does the engine run OK and is the coolant level dropping?

Where had the exhaust been while you worked on the car?
Could it just be full of rainwater or condensation?

Where in the UK are you Colin?
I have a pressure tester but no idea if I'm near you.
