Finally got a new fuel pump on the 280i I bought and fixed some leaks enough to get it started. It ran fairly rough and rich yesterday. So rich that it won't fire today aside from a hiccup or two. Car has a Capri injection fuel distributor on it (missing the connection for the frequency valve return). Virtually all US the emissions stuff has been clipped, no cats, no o2 etc. Is there a way to adjust the distributor to send less fuel? Plugs are simply black with gas. Ignition system is a blaster 2 that was on it when I got it and seems to be wired "correctly" by a non-electrician.

Also, I'm getting a slight drip of gas into the airbox below the meter. Any ideas?

Thanks!
Ben

New set of plugs first ..

Is the new pump the same as the old one .. if it's another model it might be pumping more fuel and hence a richer mixture.

Plugs are new (will clean 'em though but that isn't much help as they'll foul right back up. Pump is a volvo 240 pump which has the same specs as the original, just a different electrical connector.

My friend Jim had a 280i with gross overfuelling and it turned out to be a crimp in the return pipe from the fuel pressure regulator, disconnect and blow down it to check.

on top of fuel distributor there is a enrichment screw its down what looks like a pipe its alen headed ive a ford tool to adjust mine clockwise leans it so it needs to be wound in as the new pump will achieve better presure than an old one hence the rich over fueling simptoms as adam said also check returns as they affect greatly the mixture as the presure regulator is a primative one

To answer all your questions.

No the car has never run right since I got it not running with a fuel distributor disconnected, ruined (leaks from the center seal as it isn't exactly machined parts anymore since it wasn't stored well hence the Capri injection distributor on it). I think I have it hooked up right but would love pictures or a description of where each connection goes to be sure.

I get absolutely no return to the tank (even disconnected the return from the distributor and nothing). Will flood the engine just fine though.

Thanks

Thanks,

Still no fuel returning to the tank. I'm also getting nothing out of my cold start injector but that might be b/c it might not be connected to the computer. Any ideas on why I'm not getting fuel to return? I thought it might be a leaky cs injector which is why I took it off. Seems quite unlikely to me that all 6 injectors would be leaking enough to wet everything but I guess it is possible. Also an idea on the differences between US and UK plugs?

In my Ford Capri 2.8i workshop manual, plugs are given as Champion RN9YC or Motorcraft AGR 22. Gap 0.60mm, 0.024 in.

Yeah us plugs are different with a huge gap. I've been running the us spec with a .32 gap instead of the .45 or so they recommend. Euro plugs are not to available here so I was kind of wondering what the dif was.

These things are designed to run with a constant fuel return to the tank, apart from anything else it keeps the fuel cool in the engine bay.

Sounds like the pressure regulator is stuck, try measuring the fuel pressure. Not familiar with the v6 system myself, but on the V8 I take off the line to the cold start injector and put the gauge on there.

Cleaned the pressure return but still just starting up and dying almost immediately, can't touch the gas.

So are you geting a decent return flow now? If you put a few feet of pipe on where the return comes out of the regulator and send that into a bucket, you should get maybe a pint every few seconds?

Also worth posting a question on a forum like this one:

Yes, I'm getting a decent flow out. I'm going to try to remove the engine run sensor from the equation today by running a direct line from the battery to the fuel pump to see what it is doing. Will check out the capri forum as well
