Well the battery has given up the ghost on the 400SX, even a weekend charge didn't revive it.

I seem to remember a Type 072 will fit, can anyone confirm this? Any good pointers for motor factors that do them for reasonable prices would be welcome (my last one was about 45 quid I think, currently being quoted £68 for an 072).

I know this has been discussed before and I did try a search but searching is now so useless - you only get about 9 months worth of matches coming back.

Halfords 065 in mine, does the job and wasn't too expensive either. 4 year warranty on it as well.

Just replaced my Type 065 (495 CCA) and put a Type 096 (650 CCA), which someone gave me in. Definately recommend the larger battery, it turns the engine over far easier.

Great, thanks. I just put in the battery from the 350i (as I can't drive them both at the same time) and I suddenly realised, the 400SX has the battery the 'other way round' to the 350i (and also I'm sure, my previous 350i). The leads just about stretched but it's tight.

So my next question is - where is positive on your battery? Next to the bulkhead, or towards the front?

I'll kick off with my two:

400SX (400SE body) - Front
350i Series 1.5 - Bulkhead

Just changed mine on the 400se - I put a new Halfords HB072 in. Cost about £90, but the old one was also an 072 from Halfords, and that lasted just over 6 years, which I think is very good considering it's a second car, and I don't use a battery conditioner. Good value IMHO.

My positive is near wheel area, negative nearest bulkhead.

Interesting - the one I just took out of the 400 was a Halfrauds one, which was new when I bought the car, so it's only lasted about 3 years. What guarantee do they give - I might even have a receipt...

I put a bosch `silver` type 072 in my 350i a couple of years ago. Really tight fit, but worth the aggro and squashed fingers to squeeze it in. 4 year warranty on those and cost about £80 I think. Positive terminal towards the front on mine.

Positive is at the bulkhead end, on my 350i

Had a boshechehche silver (or however you spill bosh) for quite a few years and that included several flattening on starting issues. On another at the moment but its only been in a year so time will tell.

+1 (battery and terminal location)
Same battery since buying the wedge in 2001, and it wasn't new then.
Not on a trickle charger, and has been completely empty a few times as well.
Now probably it will be dead next time I'll try to start the engine....
