The heater fan switch? Don't just plug in another one if the old one has failed, the new one will go the same way. Rewire the heater motor through a 10A relay and use the switch to actuate the relay coil, it'll last forever smile

Hi Wedgie,

I think the one in there is original so hasnt done a bad innings!!!

Its only the hyper speed which has failed, the snail blower still works!

That's usually the case. On full welly the motor draws so much current (through such a small contact area in the switch) that the plastic body melts.
On slow speed they cheated by putting a big resistor in series with the motor to slow it down; the resistor limits the amount of current the motor can pull, so less heating of the switch.

So changing the switch won't cure the problem, y'see?

Sorry, i think im getting a little lost here...

You are saying that putting a new switch in will 'fix' it but the problem will probably come back again??

I think Ian just meant that the standard switch isn't too clever, and that his suggested mod will make it last longer, as it won't be 'loaded' so much smile

I used a light switch from rimmers I think as also a 2 way switch, side and mian lights as could not find the one with a fan symbol.
Think they were in the TR7 range on the rimmers catalogue.

So it now looks like I have 2 light switches smile

You can tap the little windows out and swap them smile

Fan switch is Lucas 182SA series, type 33939A. The lights switch as used on the early cars (ie before the SD1 column was used) is the same configuration mechanically/electrically as the fan switch, only the logo is different.
