When I took mine to Lemans this year , I checked and replaced any dodgy hoses, drained and refilled the system and changed the thermostat to a 74 deg one

I also fitted an overide switch just in case, but so far not used it smile

Was cool all the way there and back and even can sit in traffic in the current weather, and thats with my stonking great 4.5 V8 yikes, so should be easy in a 2.8 smile

I'd be concerned about that as well, in fact I am as mine is like that at the moment! First thing I'd do is whip the thermostat out to check that's not faulty. If it's still running hot try flushing the radiator and the block.

If that's not sorted you out you're probably going to need a new radiator. Which is what I'm waiting for at the moment.....

Hope this helps.

Do you have Redline Waterwetter over there or something similar? It actually works or at least I noticed a 10 degree difference in our hill climb car once I put it in there.

if the engine is running hot its mostly from these "old" radiators which are clocked, especially when the (former) owners did not run it with the correct mixture of antifreeze and regulary flush it.

throw it out and replace it be a new one. or bring it for a recore, incl. upgrade to a high efficiant core.

if you still have the original viscous fan (which isnt bad in my opinion) you are loosing cooling efficancy as there isnt any shroud around the fan (the original ford layout has a shroud).

installing a 2nd or a bigger fan will not solve the problem it will only cure the symptoms.

Check the timing is correct - after all it's what creates the heat in the first place.

Make sure you fit a TVR thermostat not a rover one as the tvr one has a larger opening for better flow, plus they seem to last longer

Something else you could try is adjusting your water/antifreeze ratio, at least until the cold weather hits. A 70/30 mix will have better cooling properties that 50/50 would, for the simple reason water is a better coolant than antifreeze.

As for me, once I get my new rad I'll run 70/30 with Water Wetter until the frost comes in the fall, then put it to 50/50 for winter hibernation.

Done.... New thermostat fitted, system had a good clean out and everything looking good. I can now give it back to my mate at the weekend and tell him to top up the antifreez level ready for winter.
Thanks for the help folks

".....and everything looking good".

"looking good" or "is good"?

have you driven the car on a motorway, also a longer distance and afterwards "simulated" a traffic jam, incl. an outside temperature which was around 30degrees?

yes or no?

if yes: it IS ok

if no: it LOOKS ok

It will get a good run out at the weekend, including motorway traffic, ive not had a chance yet.
When i said looking good, it was, compared to the way it was chucking coolant all over my drive beforehand. the old thermostat was 'proper stuck'
Fingers crossed it will behave well on a run, but im quietly confident it will.

Nic eyou got it sorted smile

Mine is running hot as well, just bought a new 74 degree thermostat, and I'll flush the radiator (& put some radiator cleaner) a couple of times to get the dirt out of it

What car does the radiator come from ? Capri 2.8i as well ?

Anyone remove dthe vico fan & replaced by an electric one ?

Rad isn't from a Capri. You might need to do a bit of research. Opinions seem to vary.

My 280 came with twin electric fans, but wiring and one fan was shot, so I went back to viscous (for reliability), but evidently can be done.
