Hi, MOH as been off the road now for 18 months engine rebuild completed but stuck with a major over fuelling problem, We have narrowed it down to the AFM, ECU or associated wiring if I dont get it sorted by the end of this summer I am afraid it will be 1 less wedge as my patience is gone. Can any one lend my a known good AFM of course I will cover all postage costs and some. Sorry to ask but as I say I am at the end of my tether with this now. Ian

Try not to let it get you Ian, i know the feeling when it feels one thing after another. Hopefully it is something simple like a faulty AFM.

Sounds like you have done alot of the big stuff like engine re-builds so it would be a shame to get rid and allow someone else to reap the benefit.

Hope it's a simple fix.

Cheers.

I made a sticking just for this. see

Other option is to find somone local with a wedge, as the parts are quite easy to swap.

If not will be happy to post you my spare's if you cover postage and return, within a reasonable time.

I had a similar problem, went over all the usual causes and the last thing I did which eventually sorted it out was to reflow the circuit boards on the ECU, although it might have been a combination of things. Do you have a decent soldering iron handy? It takes about an hour to undo it, do both sides and do it up again.

If you borrow a replacement ECU to help diagnose, you'll need the matching AFM as they tend to go together.

Have to remember a lot of Wales is up for us..... wink

Valley is oop norf by too far I think.

You could try mine but I have a hot wire. If by any chance you have a hot wire I can run it over?

I assume the throttle pot has been set? I wasn't getting a lot of over fueling but enough to cause issues.

Won't be back to see this thread until Thursday afternoon. Also I will hold hands up and say I will not be much use other than supplying spares.

Thanks guys as always you have come up trumps, MOH is a 350 flapper the symptoms are as follows.
Engine has had a rebuild now starts and ticks over nicely UNTIL we put the AFM in place at which point the running becomes extremely ruff and the garage gets filled with very smelly black smoke. My mate (time served mech of 20 + years) and the 3 others that work for him all agree that the AFM/ECU is the most likely problem hence the need for doner parts.
Leigh I would have the parts back to you with in a week as would only need a short time to use them.

Ian,

when you say "UNTIL we put the AFM in place", where is it when the engine is ticking over nicely?

O.K A go at a better explanation,

With the AFM in place and connected electrically but the pipe to the plenum removed from it as long as we restricted the air flow to the plenum all is fine even able to rev engine to a degree but as soon as the afm/plenum pipe is reconnected she over fuels like a pig. Hope that is a little clearer. Ian

The fuel pump will only run if the AFM 'flapper' is opened IIRC. How is the fuel pump running if there is no air going through it or is just using up what remaining pressure there is in the system? (or are you holding it open?)

Have you replaced the fuel pressure regulator or measured the FP at the rail?

So without the engine pulling air through the afm then It shouldn't run at all is that correct ? confused now as the only thing needed for it to run without afm connected is to restrict the air flow to the plenum, not touched the flap at all. will check fuel pressure but looked good if I remember correctly

The air from the AFM to the plenum should be perfectly sealed. yes
