Hi All,

Last week, i suddenly noticed that the powersteering became noisy so i pulled over to check the level. The fluid was low so i drove to halfroads to buy some fluid.

Good news is that the fliud top up cleared the noise and i went on my way.

When i got home, i checked the fluid and not only was it low again, but the fluid is a blacky/grey so obviously getting contaminated somewhere.

Any ideas where to start for the leak or contamination?

Cheers all!

Sling the PAS in the bin and replace it with a Rotrex C30-84 a la SC400 Chim.

Jobs a goodun! It's what I'd like to do long term. **considers selling body to raise the cash, then realises that'd be futile**

How you keeping, Matt?

Sounds like your rack boots would have to be full of fluid for that to happen.

I've had my (ex-Cortina) rack apart a couple of times, it's not hard, but to do a full strip you need to unscrew the track rods (not the rod ends, the rods themselves) from the end of the rack and on my car the securing cus have been welded to the rack as opposed to pinned/staked.
The main assembly comprises the centre tube sandwiched between two castings that are linked by the hydraulic lines. With the lines removed, the lefthand casting can be pulled off after you remove the securing bolt, then the tube pulls off... and there'll be PAS fluid everywhere biggrin
Quite where you'd go to obtain all the seals you'd need to rebuild it, I have no idea. Perhaps a hydraulics service centre, Pirtek...?

Hi wedgie!

This sounds like a big job...and i need to get on the case thick and fast!

Just reading the bible, would it likely to be the pump causing the problem or the rack?

Anyone know what the rack is in my car? Its a flapper '89 400se...

Can anyone reccomend a refurbisher..??

Cheers!

I used these last year when my rack starting squirting fluid all over the place. I think it cost about £150.
