Newbie question - battery hold down
Discussion
Hi Guys
This might just be the easiest question ever to appear on the Forum but....
I've just taken delivery of my first ever TVR (1986 350i) and the battery isn't secured in the car, it's just resting in the recess. So, in order to get a roadworthy here in Australia - can someone please let me know how it's meant to be retained? And a photo would be perfect.
I could get an aftermarket hold down kit, but I'd rather not drill more holes than I need!
Many thanks in advance.
Richard

Hi Richard
My battery holder is probably like most - approx 1" wide strip of rubber (from a mat or similar) and is screwed in at one end and uses an adjustable hook to fasten at the other end. Do you have the holes for the fixings still there?
I'll get a photo if you need it.

Hi Guys
Thanks for the info.
That would explain the rusty screw holding a tiny piece of torn rubber strip onto the bulkhead then!
I've removed the self tapping screw so I can put a new strip on the car - but how does it secure the other end to retain the battery?
As far as I an see, there is only one hole on the inner wing to put the other end in, and the adjuster (if any) must be long gone. I'm assuming that the strap holds the battery tight up against the inner wing and does not pull down on the top of the battery?
Still confused of Melbourne....

Mine is tight against the bulkhead in the rear and is "wedged" in by a couple of inches of aluminum L stock bolted vertically to the inner fender. Only comes out on a straight upward tug. Nothing holds it down except the electrical leads, gravity and imagination... but with a plastic bonnet, what's the harm?

The rubber strap is pants, so I replaced mine with a roofrack strap. Cut it so the buckle has about 6-9 inches of webbing left on it. Melt/superglue the ends of the webbing pieces so they dont fray, then make 2 small squares of ally plate with about 4 holes in each. Pop rivet/screw the Strap ends (using the ally pieces as load spreaders over the top) into the car so that they wrap around the battery sides in the same way as the old rubber strip used to. Put the loose end thru the strap buckle, tighten up and you have a secured battery.
Basically remake the old setup with a roofrack strap instead. Worked for me!
