Gents,
I've decided to replace the heads with composite gaskets which are .020'' thicker than the tin gaskets. To compensate I had the heads skimmed. Well as it turns out the guy who skimmed the heads advised it had been done previously but we didn't know how much. I asked if he would only remove 0.015''. My thinking was if the head had just been cleaned before the total would be about 0.020''.
When the other head was ready for skimming the engineer took a thickness reading and found that the second head had been skimmed by an extra 0.010''. This head only had 0.004'' taken off.

Now my problem, I need to replace the cam but the replacement cam will probably have more lift than the standard cam. As I don't know how much was taken off the heads before I may have problems with the amount off lift.

Does anyone know how I may be able to establish how much metal had been taken off the head previously.

Thanks,
BBT.

You could measure the capacity of the combustion chambers. There were two differnt capacities for RV8s, not sure what they were though. Plenty of smart cookies on this forum(http://www.v8forum.co.uk/forum/index.php) would be able to tell you.

As for the cam,you could just replace like for like and then there would be no issues with clearance etc. The above link will be able to supply loads of info on cams as well.

Don't get a cam like this as they definately don't work.
I'm sure there was a lobe on there the last time I looked

Thanks Deetes,
I'll have a nose around that forum.
I also have a cam similar to yours with a couple of lobes missing.

Depends on how much of a budget your on, but I'm in the process of upgrading a 3.9 to 4.0 spec, and it looks like it's got a good as new camshaft. which is not going to be used.

TVRLeigh,
I'm on a bit of a budget thats why things are taking a bit longer than I would have liked. I'll bear in mind you have a cam available.
May well go for a standard cam, want to keep good midrange. Looking for dyno graphs of cams seems to be my occupation at the moment.
Thanks,
BBT.

Well I've still not decided on my cam yet need order next few days. may go for solid lifters, want a 7000 RPM cam but Idealy that can use standard lift as don't have pocketed pistons, so do you have any ideas.

Oh your need to budget in lifters with a new cam, I'll keep the ones from this engine numbered so they can be re-used.

Hi,
I'm looking at stuff fairly mild, making power from 1500 rpm to say 5000/5500 rpm.
Idealy want to keep a really good mid range but want to rev to at least 5000 rpm without going flat.
Looking at V8 Developments MC1, Piper mild and fast road injection, and one of the RPI ones... I suspect quite a bit less radical than what you require.

BBT.

There's a few graphs on this thread.

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Mines quite peaky, but there's still some tuning to do. Some of the other graphs show realy good torque. Not sure which cam I ended up with, but it came from John Eales.

That should not be a problem finding a cam of that spec, the Standard LR 4.0 Camshaft does to start to go flat till 5300, but still ok at 6000 when my ECU cuts in. the pre-loads have been set for them minimum to take full advantage of what it has.
