I have my 280i running decently now so it is off to the suspension so I can have it painted by spring. Car is a couple days a week driver/should see some autox or track days every so often. I'm looking for something with better dampening and a firmer handling then my 25 year old stock set up. Which is a "better" setup the AVO or the SPAX and also what kind of spring rates would you recommend. Is the stock 350i good enough or should I be looking at a higher rate spring?

Myself use upgraded 350i springs front, standard rear(stiffning at the back is not required even the opposite sometimes especially for the shocks) and gaz shocks(adjustable allround and adjustable platform at the back). Fine for me (fast road and occassional trackday) and that is what I can recommend. Setting: shocks front a bit stiffer from the middle setting, rear a bit softer than middle and gave it even one to two clicks softer later...
Awesome grip now, and a joy to drive, but you want to go faster around corners because you can!!!!!

Springs on 280i could be different to 350i, but can`t help you on that. Weight on of the engines is roughly the same so would expect same spring rates.

Others prefer what Richard Thorpe supplies like redline shocks.
Think that the front springs I have were supplied by Richard.

A search on here can also provide you with `some more information` as it has been debatted quite a lot.

I've put the Steve Heath Gaz coilover shock kit on mine. Very versatile and puts the units at the correct angle so the spring acts correctly without flexing sideways!

I'm in the US and don't really have a source for GAZs Marshall can get AVOs and SPAX, I already ruled out the konis as I don't want to have to take 'em off to adjust 'em.

I think Richard Thorpe may ship out to N.America.

I had his Redlines (adj springseats) and springs fitted all round on my 280.

A definate improvement, but probably not stretched by a rubbish driver like me. hehe

Think Steve's coilover set is best (at least from, think rear is not necessary). But think I read that he (his business) cannot deliver to the US due to liability or something like that, so seems not to be an alternative for you. In the set are gaz shocks included if I remember well.

Seems that the good parts for ok price are always somewhere else, like in: the grass is always greener where you are not. Still consider the UK to be the TVR parts paradise, from my Continent/Belgium point of view anyway. Still close enough to the UK to source there if required, especially with a little help from friends.... (Hans must contact you as we haven't spoken in a long time and hope you are well).

Someone put a crappy coil over set up in the rear so I'm not so sure I have the parts to go back to a stock set up. Yeah Marshall said the same thing about the GAZ (which is fine as at least with the SPAX or AVO I know I can get 'em rebuilt should the need arise without too much delay). Can I get an AVO or SPAX coil over for both the front and rear? Everything I've read is that even with the stock 350i springs I doubt I'll be happy.

The coilover setup - so I've been told is the best setup regardless of the make. I have SH coilovers on the front and intend putting them on the rear. I went one step further when swapping to coilovers by doing away with the existing shock mounts and fabricating my own. This was brought on by the fact that the original springs as supplied were too soft causing the front end to almost collapse on to the wheels whilst driving and bending the upper shock turrets in the process.

Despite the changes I was forced to make the front end feels nice and taut and the steering feels much lighter and responsive justifying all the work I put in to the process.

The question being however, would the turrets have warped if I had the right springs?
