Brilliant sunny morning up here in the frozen north, so I decide to take the Wedge to work.

Start her up and move her out of the garage and onto the road. Turn engine off, close garage door and get briefcase to put in the boot.

Jump back in and she won't start. Engine doesn't even turn over.

I can hear the fuel pump running when I turn the ignition key, but no noise from the starter, not even a click from the soleniod.

All the relays look OK (I've swapped a couple around to try and see if that was the problem - no joy).

I haven't had chance to get a multimeter out yet, as I had to get to work.

I propose to check voltage to starter and continuity to earth, and also check voltage at starter soleniod when trying to crank the engine.

Might try to bump start her first so I can get her back on the drive / in the garage though.

Any other thoughts / ideas from you guys out there?

Have you taken a mallet/hammer to the starter motor yet?

I don't think it's stuck as there is no clicking from the solenoid.

Worth a try first though, thanks.

Sounds like the little wire from ign to starter has either fallen of or melted yikes

Happens quite a lot on mine, so I put the wire in a heat shield and made sure the connector was really tight smile

You don't have a Thatcham 1 immobilizer do you? If so, reset and cancel to re enable the system.

Failing that check the main battery connections, may be enough to operate fuel pump but won't operate starter solenoid.

from there just work back to switch, solenoid, starter, relays, earth connections etc.

Best of luck.

Cheers guys, I'll do all of the above, plus a lot of F'ing and blinding probably, when I get home this evening.

Bloody typical, a good weekend for the weather as well frown

Happens to me too, but very infrequently. Generally next start all is well. Bad ground?
Fairly new (-3000 miles) gear reduction starter motor.

Good point about the earth. I'm off home now to try and fettle it.

Right chaps, thanks for all the pointers. Turned out that the wire to the solenoid has a dodgy spade connector. Cleaned it up and she fired first time.

Time for an early evening blast methinks.

Happened again this morning. A couple of tries and it fired up.
Time for me to look at that connector.
