As we are approaching winter - I'd stick with an 82.

If you had massive power /over heating issues / live in a hot climate then 74 is best.

Don't forget when you put the new thermostat in you need to make sure that the little hole with the joggle pin in it is at the top. Otherwise you may get air that can't easily escape blocking the hot water getting at the element.

The ones which TVR fitted apparently had a larger orifice (oooh er missus)although I've never compared side by side. I think my two are a German brand - I use a 74 in summer, and an 82 in winter. Unless your car has been heavily tweaked, or you do track days, I would stay with an 82 all year.

I use a boggo 82 deg SD1 thermostat and have never once had it overheat even on hot summer days in traffic. 390SE.

Yeh, the special large bore ones will flow more, but I've never needed one. Shouldnt need to change it for winter as the thermostat will just close very slightly as the engine temp drops until the reduction in coolant flow brings the temprature back up again, hysteresis excepted.

I had a new waterpump and thermostat fitted two weeks ago.
It runs a dream with an 82 degree stat. No overheating in traffic at all.

The manufacturer is Wahler, the partnumber for the 74 deg one is 3004.74, so I would guess 3004.82 would be for the 82 deg one.
They were available from TVR supplies on eBay earlier this year, but not sure who stocks them at the moment.
