SPAX shocks SUCK is there any decent coilover source?
Discussion
Well I removed the crappy SPAX shock/coilover from the front today as the spacers are supposed to arrive on monday to give me the proper ride height only to find that it is blown after 15 miles the top collar mount area is bent and the t bar was bent so bad that I had trouble getting the POS off. Can only hope Marshall will take the junk back.
Now I'm back to square one less the $250 for springs and spacers plus possibly the wasted money on the spax. Is there anybody who makes a proper coilover set up for the front. Don't give me pipe dream suggestions as SH and RT apparently won't sell their products to the US so they are about as worthless to me a spax should be to anybody else.
Please help as I'm more than poed at the whole situation at this point plus I'll have a poed painter come monday as it was scheduled to go in for painting next week and now that can't happen. Maybe I should just get out the bfh and start pounding.

Sorry as you can see I'm a little Pissed off and frustrated by the lack of a decent option let alone the hours wasted on a crappy product that I wouldn't put on my 4 year olds tricycle. Wouldn't have bought the car had I known it couldn't be made to handle like it isn't 30 years old. Would've focused my attention towards the loti.
Well considering the SEAC wasn't available here I can't speak of that but I've never driven a 280i that would handle with even a vette of its day stock. The potential is there to be a solid 1.0g car. Aside from the suspension the car is very solid. It just needs proper springs and since the uneven compressed springs in a standard wedge or the Cortina is less than ideal it really isn't an option if you want it to be able to outhandle a Honda Fit.
Again, are there any manufacturers of a coil spring set up that is good enough for the manufacturer to stand behind their product and sell it in the US?

Not the cars fault - they are all old ladies now...
For what it's worth my last new shock purchase was from RT racing, but you say they won't export, but someone has already made the suggestion about buying for you & then exporting to you.
I'm in a similar position, the suspension on my SEAC needs freshening up, currently looking around.

I've been investigating coil-overs for the front of my 400. Although SH is still showing the kit on the website, some correspondence with him reveals that due to various issues, he is not supplying (I got the impression that this is final, rather than temporary). I also spoke to Richard Thorpe the other day, and whilst he still does the conversions, it is not a bolt on kit. The turrets and bottom wishbone both need strengthening because of the greater forces exerted on these parts, so they need the car to work on. All this of course is of no help to the OP unfortunately.
Out of interest, has anyone had the RT conversion done, and is able to give any feedback as to the way the car behaves?

I had RT replace all shockers/springs/bushes on my 280i FHC (Redline adj' at the back), properly set up, and was then able to hustle the old girl along our winding British lanes at a 'respectable' pace. Maybe I'm just a brilliant driver.
The Cortina geometry was totally different, and used its own subframe incidentally. I remember lying under one for months rebuilding the whole car, including all the suspension. Even managed to get that to handle....with the additional weight of a 3 litre Essex up front, to the extent that my mate in his 308GTB was struggling to lose me.
Don't laugh !

buy another car maybe?
I had one that I got rid of for this thinking that a TVR would be a better long term fun car. Sadly, I had that Subaru SVX outhandling any TVR 280i I've every driven which just goes to show how much potential there is out there for the TVR. When the car breaks before the tires then you know the suspension isn't up to modern standards. Again, all I want is other options that people have used aside from the pipe dreams of SH or RT as they are not an option. As was said before I can buy a set up have it shipped to a friend in the UK then shipped here but by that point I'm paying as much for shipping as for the set up that evidently isn't up to snuff otherwise it would've been sold here anyways. Then what happens when something breaks, I'm out the car for a few months until the new part arrives from across the pond.Besides, I've wasted enough money and time already on crap parts for the car that now its getting the worn Armstrongs back on it and Springs so at least it can go to the paint shop. All I wanted was a set up that I was sure it wasn't going to crack the new paint in the spring. I guess that is too much to ask
I have the SH coilovers on the front and I've had to re-configure the upper and lower mounts to accomodate them with confidence. That's not to say the product is poor but I wantd to do away with the supplied brackets and mount them directly by adpating both the upper and lower mounts.

No it's nothing to do with that. It's more to do with the US population's failure to take responsibility for their own actions and suing for any and everything. The reason why I do not ship products to the States/North America is that my insurers consider the risk too high for the level of premium I am prepared to pay because of the highly litigious nature of the US where it seems to be common place to sue for anything. The first thing the insurers ask is "do you ship to the US/Canada?" before you even get to explaining what the products actually are. Mention performance cars and the line goes dead... Actually all the cover I have looked at have said categorically - no shipping to the US or Canada. No one over here is prepared to protect a small company in the US market. The premiums are simply too big for anyone other than a big company to consider and even then it can make them uncompetitive if they have to pass on the premium costs. If they don't then they are effectively subsidizing the US market.
As a result, the economics for a small company such as myself are not viable. It's nothing personal. Nothing to do with the product being up to it - more a case of I can't justify the total cost of sales and/or the potential risks for the very very small turnover.
It is the same reason by TVR stopped shipping to the US in the first place: a 10 times increase in insurance premium where the premium was more than the turnover they got from the market.
It's tough but that's life.
