rebuilt engine problem.
Discussion
Hi all,
I had to replace some failed parts in my engine, I started last year in about august and have just got to the point of trying to start it. Took so long due to work commitments. Anyway after lots of new parts including cam I was ready to fire it up on Saturday. So, primed the fuel system, primed the oil system and filled with coolant. Turned the key, spun over but would not fire. Absolutely sure cam timing is ok, distributer and leads all connected ok. Can't find anything wrong as yet. After many atempts and adjustments of ignition timing I got it to run on say four.
After thinking about it I may not have primed the oil system as I should have. I spun the pump and checked oil was coming from where it should have been.
I was wondering if I should have primmed it to the point all followers were full of oil. From what I've read it takes a couple of minutes at 2500 rpm for things to get right. So is there a chance my valves were not operating correctly. I'm thinking / hoping this may be the problem. Anyone any experience of this.
Regards, BBT.

Thanks for the replies,
I'm working for the next few days so wont get to look at it for a while.
I will make all the checks suggested just in case.
Adam,
I replaced the tin gasket with composite and skimmed the heads .020 '' to compensate.
Cleaned and ground the valves in, new rocker shaft, rockers, push rods, lifters, camshaft, oil pump/gears, injectors serviced plus new HP fuel hose on injectors, new JP timing chain and gears. Its got new cap, leads, plugs and FPR from before the strip down. new gaskets and replaced oil lines to remote filter. As you know, loads of plugs disconected to get plenum and inlet manifold off, also removed anything that was in my way like the AFM.

If it sounds like it's only running on four, it might be, if the ECU's playing up. The injectors are fired in two banks of 4 (left and right). Unlikely, but you never know.
You may have some stuck injectors, they don't like being dry for long periods. You're quite sure you had no. 1 cylinder at TDC on compression when you timed the distributor up?
The cam followers should prime a lot quicker than 'a couple of minutes' even from dry, and anyway on a newly-built engine I wouldn't be looking for 2500 revs for a good while.
Shame you're a bit far from me, I could have popped along with some test kit...

You will need to run it at 2500 for 20 minutes or so to bed in the new cam.
