I'm thinking of taking the GRP sills off to get to the outriggers and chassis rails for a good clean up and paint and was wondering if anyone has been down that route and thought about refitting the sills in a way which would make them more 'easily' removeable in future. As I understand, the sills are held on with 3 bolts and a series of pop-rivets .. and the usual heavy dose of TVR silicone wink
On my 390SE, a previous re-spray has covered both the pop-rivets and the 'join' between sill and body, so this project needs some thought.

I also notice that the sill 'wraps' around the outriggers, so I was thinking if cutting part of lower section of the sill below the outrigger to allow more access for cleaning and maintenance ?

Any tips, tricks or advice ?

Get them off - it's the only way to do a "proper job". You're lucky you can, the rest of the car looks almost series II...

I think your car is similar to Wedg1e's, and I believe he's had his sills off, so may be able to advise.

Apart from colour and wheels, that's virtually the same car (I call it series 1.75!) as mine... shortly after, the front air dam and sills were changed and the 'proper' rear wing developed into the 'wing-cum-bumper' which formed the basis of the 400SE rear.

There do seem to be a few variations on the methods used to attach the sills (usually, as said, including mastic!) - the biggest ball-ache I ever had was with a bolt down in the driver's footwell. I wouldn't bother chopping any bits off the GRP though, the sills are only a bit thin to start with and it's not as if you need to clean the tubes every few weeks. Your car seems to have the usual amount of rust for a painted chassis; as long as you can't poke holes in it, get as much as you can back to shiny steel and paint the hell out of it.

Oh, I wouldn't recommend supporting the car under that tube, either wink
