Electrical problems
Discussion
Good news is I finally have oil pressure after the changing the oil
I have a weird problem with the electrics though. I have changed all fuses and relays beacuse they looked a bit cruddy.
1. The headlights dont pop up. One did now doesnt. The motors feel warm and relays pulling in.
2. The voltmeter isnt working
3. The wiper doesnt work
4. The fan runs perminently as does the fuel pump.
I will have to have a poke around with my multimeter but ant ideas first
Cheers

Shaun, when you changed the relays did you make sure you replaced like for like? Although they all look the same some of the relays are different part numbers with different internal arrangments.
Agreed, although the only 'odd' relay normally is the injection system 'Main' relay which has two terminals numbered '87'.Shaun, is it the heater fan or the cooling fan that runs permanently?
Cheers guys,
I did check that all the relays i have changed are identical to the new ones. Even my main relay is the sames as the others i.e. 87 and 87a. Someone has rewired the main relay so that it is standard. My guess was a loss of ground - i guess the problem is finding it.
The cooling fan runs all the time the ignition is on as does the fuel pump. I removed FP relay and fuse and the thing still runs (actually disconnected now at the pump)
Cheers

If it is a missing ground the quickest way to find it is to provide another one....
Long peice of wire, two croc clips.
One end on ground of battery and poke the grounds on the car.
Typical symptom of missing ground is that something will operate or try to op at half power.
Headlamps sound like a good place to start.

All the earths from the electrics at the front of the car gather at a pile of ring terminals secured to a stud on the left-hand suspension tower, below the AFM. That would include lights and cooling fan but not the wiper or voltmeter.
If the pod motors are getting warm but not lifting that would suggest current is flowing through the windings.
A cooling fan would typically draw upwards of 5A; if it appears to be running at full speed that would have to be some low-resistance alternative route it was taking (eg headlamp bulbs).
Not convinced it's an earth issue myself but would go along with Jeff's test-lead method to find it.

Hi Ian,
The motors did feel warm but if they are taking current and not turning I would guess either voltage is very low or stalled (although they do wind up by hand) or am I barking up the wrong tree.
I have been trying to follow the wiring diagrams in SH bible but parts of the diagrams are missing and even marked up wrong. Would you have a set diagrams you could fax / email me
Cheers mate

Well there's a full lights diagram on me webbie, free gratis and traced from an actual car, not just hearsay or hand-me-down info The motors did feel warm but if they are taking current and not turning I would guess either voltage is very low or stalled (although they do wind up by hand) or am I barking up the wrong tree.
