Hello all,
I'm new to the wedgeworld; acquired a 350i back in November last year after a little research and viewing a few cars. Someone round the corner from me was selling one; '87 350i, no MOT, no back window, cracked front screen, crunchy chassis, dropped passenger door and silly money - but when he started it up - Oh my God I had to have one!!
I bought the third one I saw knowing it had problems but it's an honest, original car that's not been meddled with and I'm enjoying the challenge of getting it back into shape.
The engine was pushing coolant out of the overflow a few seconds after starting from cold with the cap off, so I knew the head gaskets were dodgy; what I wasn't prepared for when stripping down was the major blowing of the gaskets into the tappet area of the vee, resulting in thoroughly burnt deposits of oil and very corroded steel baffles inside the cam covers from the acid in the exhaust - just goes to show that not using a car much and starting the engine every so often to check it's OK is not such a bright idea...
Anyhow I have a question. It's got the original foam cylinder intake air filter that's crumbling to dust. I'd place a bet that the filter itself is off some other car, what's it off? Is there an alternative paper filter that'll do the job? I'm not a K+N/Pipercross/ITG fan, but what alternatives have I got?
Forgot to say... it's an 86 built Series 2 350i with a flapper, got to have those pops and bangs!
