Hi Mike.
Sorry to hear about your daughter....hopefully the condition is only temporary, which it often is.
The 'Bible' shows several different systems for the 280. One of the specialists should be able to sort you out with the right one, or perhaps you'll be lucky enough to find a TVR breaker with a stainless one going spare.
They cost about £350- £500 new (stainless)...about half that for mild steel.
Oops, and to answer your question:
I've only made up exhausts for cars that I've modified, many moons ago.
In mild steel it's dead easy, to be honest. Take the old one off and measure lengths and angles. Make friends with one of the guys down at your local fast-fit place, and rummage through the rubbish bin/parts catalogue for silencer boxes. Buy some pipe and clamps to join join it all together, and there you go.
On yours it's probably easier just to buy a system though.
